Stolen Vehicles...

with quite a few robberies and fake registrations going on these days, how do you check if the vehicle that you are going to purchase is not stolen, has not been "butted"and having fake registration documents.. is there any sure way?

reason i ask is, we checked out a white montero about 6 months ago. nice machine with 18" blck wheels with polished lip. wide kit. many of you'll may have noticed it. i have seen it at katu one time as well.... looked really nice. they were asking 65 for it...which is why we didn't buy it ;)

Anyways, last month i saw a cop driving it near independance ave... i was thinking to myself, must be a mara paga kareya to afford that. come to find out a friend of mine told me that he saw this jeep and another white montero at wellawatte police...they both had the same no. plates!

now that would have been me had the price been less.. how do you check if the vehicle papers are legit?

Best way is to check the chassis no: right? i mean check if it tallies wit the documentation n stuff.. Or else drive the bloody vehicle to the police station, and ask if nyone is looking for something like this!? lol

In SL I dont think we have a proper way of checking it. but if they had a system that is great.

:D

i was thinking...

as silly as it may sound, if you suspect something fishy about your vehicle, it wouldnt hurt to take the vehicle to a police station and ask them about it. preferlably get an official recognition that you did this. so that'll filter out any already wanted vehicles, and if SOMETHING does hapen in the end you can save yourself.

plus wouldnt hurt to get allt he details of the seller of the vehicle...

would like to hear more about Montero Story if anyone's got info....

Hi Fuzzo,

I think the RMV systems are completely computerised and thus it is pretty difficult to have legit documents for cut but or other stolen type vehicles. I was talking to some specialists who makes a living out of cut but and while I was there 2 Troopers and a Land Cruiser was being "assembled" to be driven away. And if anybody is curious, NO I did not purchase such a vehicle or had any plans in doing so (though I must say it was quite tempting) I was simply visiting a friend who decided to show me arround.

Thanks to the computerisation no new log books or registration entries can be made for a fake vehicle. all they can do is change an existing entry by bribing somebody inside. This means you either end up with an older than usual number for a vehicle, or the chassy number or the engine number on the log book not properly matching that particular model and make of vehicle.

So I asume there is no one check you can do to ensure that the vehicle is completely legit but a few checks should be able to put your mind at rest.

Check with the RMV if the log book is legal and they have a record for it.

Check the engine number and the chassy number to see if they match with make and model, for example I think in mistubishi's the chassy number starts with the model number, like in my car it starts with CA3A and then a number so should be easy enough to figure out.

Check if the number assigned to the vehicle matches the asumed registration date for the vehicle. for example it is very unlikely for a 1998 model pajero to have a number which was issued in 1993.

Also you can ask the seller to produce vehicle revenue certificates for the previous years that the vehicle has been owned.

I think by following the above steps more often than not you should be able to spot the buds and forgeries. The price of forgeries and cut buds have gone up considerably because of new security procedures introduced by customs and the RMV, thus its not really as worthwhile anymore going through all the trouble to be involved in it,

Just a note of caution also, there are very few flat roofed pajero's of the manthree model legally imported into SL, and quite a few of the ones being driven arround are buds etc, thus be very careful when purchasing one,

I hope this info helps,

The Don

thanks DOn for the reply. only issue is that the forgeries are also getting smarter. like i said, the forged no was off another montero.. plus i believe the issueing of new fake "books" hasn't stopped. there are new jeeps coming down on tsunami permits which are getting new ongoing nos.

i guess past historic documents would be one of the surest way..but even that can be forged very easily now

Sadly I think you may be right, yeps all the vacant books thanks to the Tsunami vehicles must be providing people with loads of opportunities for forgeries cos as long as the book is of the same model of car then it is extremely difficult to differentiate the 2 unless there was an insuarance claim on the first and and it is listed as written off,

I remember the scandal before was the loophole in import regulations over "body permits" where bodies were imported supposedly to replace damaged or corroded bodies in existing vehicles, so these people were spending hours at police auctions etc to purchase unservicable vehicles just so that they can use the resulting body permit to smuggle a half cut into the country

yeah i did see those ads... i was also expecting them to be cheaper but they are no where close to being cheap...

also there is not only body permits, there are also chassis permits. i have "heard" of people getting down body's and chassis seperately for permits and voila.. you have a brand new jeep

i'm quite surprised no one has seen this white montero i'm referring to. it's probably one of the hottest looking monteros in town. it was in the small car sale on hospital road just past anderson road

Ya, bringint down bodies for vehicles and fiting them onto older vehicles is common.. some months back my father went to a Army Auction hoping to find a nice defender to buy and build up for personal use.. hoping to go upto something to even abo9ut 175,000/= cos those were just hunks of rusted metal with more parts sitting ont he ground than on the behicles.. in some cases gear boxed were on the bqck of the jeep and not mounted to the engine.. imagine our suprise wehn they all sold for prices OVER 475,000... and this was before the big tax increase some time back....

so i can only imagine that people buy those vehicles for the book and book alone..

That's true....

They just buy those only for the book. In Auctions (Specially Army, and other govt. auctions) people buy just the 4 wheels & the base (sometimes load of soil and plants on it even) for over 500,000 sometime. But the secrete is all these comes with THE BOOK. They even don't take the rubbish out and just sell it to a person who buy the remaining for metal, and that person clear the junk and the buyer just goes out with the book. May be he wants to sell it to a bothal Paththra karaya. :violent-smiley-030:

I've seen it. White montero, black alloys, kit, front lip right out of NFS. I've seen it on the road some time ago too.

I had to face an inquiry 2 years back, coz some dimwit had stolen a Mazda from BMICH and replaced the number with my car that caught fire and was condemed which was then lying in some god foresaken garage waiting to be auctioned. The dude had forged the registration papers, advertised the vehi in ona em popular papers and finally sold it. (I partly blame the insurance company for not getting the registration changed to their name immdeiately).

The car was confiscated while it was with the party who unknowingly baught it.
