What Is The Most Necessary Mileage To Go For An Engine Overhaul

Guys,

What is the most necessary mileage at which the vehicle's engine should be overhauled, for petrol small engines like 1.3L (the brand ... I would say a tough brand like toyota or nissan)? Within which kilometre range should it be done and how can we identify when the engine needs to be overhauled? (I would appreciate if someone can exactly or approximately say the mileage limit in kilometres. )

And at an engine overhaul, what are the parts to be replaced or repaired?

How much it will cost for an average engine overhaul and what are the implications of not doing an overhaul.

you cant set an exact figure as it depends on the conditions the engine has been driven. Best way is to do a compression check if you feel its time to do a rebuild. The cost will vary depending to the extent to which the job is done and the brand of motor. Most petrol engines if taken care of well will serve you close to 200k without a rebuild

High lubricant consumption in engine and smoke,engine starting problems when cold or hot are few basic ways to know.

Best and the easiest for you is to take the car to the nearest qualified mechanic and find out.

As Elvi mentioned ,the compression loss test is one of the good technical ways of finding out.

To add to what other's have said. If the the motor has been abused and not taken care of properly it might need replacing of vital parts rather quickly.

Mileage alone is not a good enough yard stick...

Generally in SL most folks say a motor needs to be overhauled when it's burning lubricant and loosing compression due to worn pistons/rings etc...

But there can be many other things also needing replacement and at times you really gotta get into the motor itself to see the extent of the damage..

luckily piston wear is quite easy to spot if not a compression test will seal the deal most of the time.

So you really gotta look at individual "signs" to see what might need replacement cos most of them will "show" it's problem in one way or the other...

a good mechanic should be able to look at this tell-tale signs and tell you what might need replacement other that the obvious ones...

If everything is working satisfactorily leave the engine well alone. If you are starting to burn a lot of oil with bluish smoke from the exhaust and poor prformance from the engine start with a compression test and carry out a cylinder leak test if you know some on who has the equipment-I know tht there has to be some one with one as I gave it to him a few years ago, to identify the exact area of the loss of pressure. If you are then set on removing the engine and dismantling it inspect all the moving parts and replace the following at the least

All the Bearings

All the gaskets and oil seals

All the piston rings, if not replacing the pistons themselves

Oil pump, Water pump and timing belt and the tensioner and idler pulleys

Any worn valves, valve seats, guides and all the valve stem oil seals

Also have your machine shop do at least the following,

Measure cylinder bores, re bore and hone or if well within usable tolerances just hone the bores

Re cut valve seats and re face valves and lap them in(grind)

Check out the cam shaft and followers as well as any rockers buckets and replace as needed

Check and replace if possible any hydraulic lifters

Re-face cylinder head and re fit using new head bolts if recomended by the engine maker onto cleaned and lightly lubricated threads in the block.

If possible have your injectors tested and cleaned-specially if it is a Diesel-then have the pump re sealed and caliberated.

Remember an engine is the sum of it's parts so be thorough-dont need to be wasteful how ever.
