Vw Beetle 1969 (1300 Model) Model Brake Problem

Hi friends,

Am running VW beetle which is a 1969 (1300 model). my brakes were very poor. if i go around 60kmh and apply brakes, the car will stop after going 5 or 6 meters. the brake shoes were worn out and i replaced them. when i drove for the first time after replacement i felt like the brakes are worst than before. so when i ask my mechanic he said that it will take some time for the new shoes to get seated with the drums. the brake system is been bleed and there are is no air trapped. so i made a drive to colombo and back and i felt that the brakes were some what good than the first drive after replacement. what i want to know is is that, what my mechanic said to me is true or not ?

Hi

Yes as soon as you put new brake shoes on it will take some time to bed in to the drums. Because the drums will not have a perfectly even surface the first time you try your brakes it will be poor. But as the shoes bed in they should wear in and start to match the drums surface so you will see an increase in braking performance. Some modern brake pads have a special bed-in layer which helps the bed in process.
