The Renault R29 may not be truly competitive yet, but at least its performance at the last round in China was enough to put a small smile back on the face of former champion Fernando Alonso. And given that this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix is only the fourth round of the season, there is still plenty of opportunity for strong results - perhaps even podiums…

Although the season was just two races old, last year's championship was already looking pretty meaty as the paddock looked ahead to the calendar's third instalment in Bahrain. With McLaren's Lewis Hamilton leading the drivers' standings on 14 points from Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen (11) and BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld (11), and McLaren (24) at the top of the constructors' table, ahead of BMW Sauber (19) and Ferrari (11), there was already a clear three-way fight for the title.

Team principals: Flavio Briatore (Renault), Stefano Domenicali (Ferrari) and Christian Horner (R*D B*LL)Q: It has been likened to a football match starting and then all the football players sitting down for the first 15 minutes. Flavio, I don't know what would happen at Queens Park Rangers but when we had the free practice this morning everyone stayed in the pits for the first half hour. We don't have any testing. Why doesn't everyone want to go out?Flavio Briatore: I believe everybody was waiting for somebody to go out to clean the circuit. It looked like at one point that everybody would go out together. This is the reason.

It was Williams who topped a closely-stacked field at the end of the opening two practice sessions for the Bahrain Grand Prix at Sakhir. The tasks for the day, as usual, were chassis set-up work and tyre evaluation, the latter again being critical with the need to run both Bridgestone's medium and super soft tyre compounds. We take a team-by-team look at progress…

As Monty Python reminded us, you should always look on the bright side of life. Brawn's Rubens Barrichello certainly does, and it has served him well. Indeed, while many believed last season's Brazilian Grand Prix could be his last race, he is currently a hot contender for this year's championship. And the longest-serving F1 driver couldn't be happier...

Force India driver Adrian Sutil has been demoted three places on the grid for the Bahrain Grand Prix after race stewards decided he blocked R*D B*LL's Mark Webber during qualifying on Saturday.Webber was in the latter stages of a flying lap near the close of Q1 when he came up to Sutil, who was travelling more slowly. For the 2009 season, the FIA are making public the weights of all cars ahead of the race start to help give an idea of relative fuel loads. The cars that made Q3 are weighed after qualifying, while the weights of the remaining cars must be declared by their teams shortly after the session.Below is the provisional grid for Bahrain with each car's weight. Cars use around 2.6 kilos of fuel per lap at Sakhir. Note - Force India's Adrian Sutil has dropped from 16th to 19th after being penalized for blocking R*D B*LL's Mark Webber during qualifying.

For some time, former Benetton and BAR boss David Richards has been searching for a way back into Formula One racing. And although his dreams of a Prodrive-badged customer-car team came to nothing in 2008, like Lola, he's hopeful the FIA's mooted budget cap could present his best chance yet of returning to the grid…

Aston Martin F1?

posted by Jamie Hibbard

Aston Martin Chairman David Richards has revealed that his Prodrive company is looking to enter Formula One, with a view to taking up one of three available spots open to new teams next year.

This is cool news for many reasons, the first of which is that we could have as many as 26 cars on the grid in 2010 - it’s always good to have loads of cars in a race!

And second, there’s a chance that the Prodrive outfit will enter as Aston Martin, which would be, well, bloody British.

We’re already keenly following Aston’s top-flight entry into Le Mans this year, so having them in F1 would be very exciting.

Richards has tempered our excitement a little, though, explaining that the Prodrive team might not get badged as Aston. “There are many discussions to be had in the coming weeks once the regulations have been published. We will then make a decision,” he told Autosport.

There are some in the Top Gear office who think that Aston doesn’t make sense as a brand in F1, because it makes GT cars. However, I think it would be a pretty awesome to see Aston go up against the likes of Ferrari.

Richards is assessing the situation in light of the FIA’s planned budget cap, that would see a voluntary £30 million limit placed on teams.

These teams would then be given huge freedom in technical innovation by the sport’s governing body. Think movable wings, no engine rev limit, no restriction on the number or type of updates, no homologation requirements, no limits on materials, testing, simulators, wind tunnels and so on. This freedom won’t be offered to the bigger spending teams.

The budget won’t cover driver salaries, motor homes, marketing and the like, but will cover all development work – and even ‘freebies’ from other teams will be assigned a real world cost and covered by the cap (say if McLaren let Aston use their wind tunnel for free).

This idea could take F1 back to the days where small privateer teams were actively vying for wins with the big boys, and the rumoured eight teams considering entering F1 will no doubt have been buoyed by Brawn’s recent success (although even they are operating way beyond a £30 million cap).

FIA president Max Mosley has requested that current teams submit their own capping proposals by tomorrow (Thursday), before announcing the plans next week.

If nothing else, this could lead to some interesting times in F1 next season, so let us know what you think about it all: will it add to the excitement of F1, or create a two-tier championship?

Given his recent practice form, it would have come as a surprise not to find Williams' Nico Rosberg at the top of the time sheets at some point over the Bahrain weekend. While it may be morale boosting, when it comes to qualifying and the race, things are slightly different. But the young German is convinced that if the team keeps up with their pace of development, more points and even podiums will follow…

This season R*D B*LL's Sebastian Vettel seems to be an all or nothing kind of driver. In the first two races he scored zero points, before dominating the wet Chinese Grand Prix from start to finish. On Sunday in Bahrain he'll start from P3 on the grid with an enviable fuel load on board his RB5. Things are looking good again for the German driver…

Tyre preservation will again be the name of the game here, but Sakhir is a very different type of circuit to Melbourne and China, where degradation on the super-soft rubber militated in favour of the mediums. They take longer to hit their optimum temperature and have less grip, so everyone will try to go as far as they can on super softs and keep the prime running to a minimum. But some are more adept at eking out tyre life than others...

Bridgestone have announced they will introduce a brand new intermediate wet-weather tyre at May's Monaco Grand Prix. The new softer compound has been designed to counter some of the lost aerodynamic grip in wet conditions, prompted by this season's new regulations. “Our new intermediate tyre compound will debut at Monaco and we will use this for the rest of the season,” said Hirohide Hamashima, Bridgestone director of motorsport tyre development. “It is a softer compound and will allow more mechanical grip, however, the lower downforce from the latest cars means that it is still more of a challenge driving in the wet than before.”
