Who Inventented Vtec.. It's Not Honda

Once you read the topic i'm sure some of you will be amezed. Because all of us (at least most) is thinking VTEC is invented by Honda and i saw lot of comments in forum threads that Honda invented VTEC.. etc. Most articles says Honda R&D engineer Ikuo Kajitani who invented this in .............

Recently I came across a local magazine and red article about this according to that, the technology was introduced by Alfa-Romeo in 1980s.

Later Nissan used this technology in 300ZX in 1987. However it was a mechanical system and even Alfa-Romeo didn't recognize the importance of the technology they invented... that's what they say.

After that Honda engineer Ikuo Kajitani did more research and developed the existing system the they came up with VTEC engine in 1989 Integra model. This is just an improvement of previous variable valve timing used by Alfa Romeo and not a complete revolution in the technology.

No doubt that VTEC was invented by Honda.

AFAIK the based technology (variable Valve Timing) was first introduced to the automotive industry by FIAT (in mid 19’s) and followed by GM and the ALFA first put it in use. Having said that, it was no new technology in the other industries such as locomotive and aero even by then.

Later every one else followed the based technology with their variants and Named them. Honda – VTEC, Nissan NVCS /VVL, BMW – VANOS, Toyota VVT-i. And they succeeded in different levels.

So let’s not split our hair to find out who invented the technology. Just be thankful to whomever that got this idea to revolutionize the automotive industry to a new level.

To control airflow in an engine you can change two things about the valves:

1. How early or late in the cycle the valve opens and closes -- this is Variable Valve Timing.

2. How "wide" you open the valve -- this is Variable Valve Lift

You can control the airflow using one of these techniques, but there are other aspects like controlling the turbulence of the air, or the density of the fuel mix through the cylinder that require both lift and timing to be controlled.

So the first production car VVT engine was by Alfa Romeo and the First VVT+EC (Electronic Lift Control was made by Honda)

The new Fiat Multiair system is an infinitely variable lift and timing system - this is a really really big deal. Will be seen first in the Alfa Mito GTA.

Guess you inq about VVT,variable valve timing.

The very first VVT systems came into existence in 19th century steam locomotive engines.

Bristol Jupiter radial engined aircrafts of the early 1920s incorporated variable valve timing gear .

Fiat was the first auto manufacturer to patent a functional automotive VVT system which included variable lift. Developed by Giovanni Torazza in the late 1960s.

Alfa Romeo was the first manufacturer to use a variable valve timing system in production cars .The 1980 Alfa Romeo Spider 2.0 L had a mechanical VVT.

Honda's REV motorcycle engine employed on the Japanese market-only Honda CBR400F in 1983 was the first Japanese VVT system and the first on two wheels.
