hi guys.. earlier iwas looking for a primera p11 and you guys really helped me out.. but it didn't work out.. Then I saw this Peugeot 406

http://autolanka.com/ad.asp?ID=8791

I'm really really starting to like this car. I went to check it out.. everything looks good.. But there is a small issue (I think) with the rear suspention. The guy said a link is failing and needs replacement. My question is can some one please let me know is this is a costly job ? And whats the current market price for this car ?

Thanks in advance.

I used to owned D9, but I think as far as suspensions goes its almost the same.

those are called suspension links. you have one upper and lower link on each side rear.

each cost around Rs 2000 each after market. not at the agent. parts are available.

those links needs to change every 5000 miles depending on driving. changing is not a big deal/

you have 4 in th back and 2 in the front

That's a relief.. Thanks for the info..

I would not recommend 406 as a first car. it is a owesome car to drive. handling and comfort.

but unless you have some extra $$$ for repairs I wouldnt buy it. parts are available but expensive. Not every mechanic can touch these cars.

Go for a Japanese. Best choice..

call me bias but parts are not that expensive compared to other european stuff. Agent prices are sky high but thats the same with agents of japanese brands. What i found was parts are sometimes cheaper than new japanese parts. For an example i replaced the radiator for 18k brand new, can quote few more examples where mechanical parts are not that expensive as they're claimed to be. But when it comes to body parts it's a different story, you got to be with a comprehensive insurance cover. Go for it mate if you looking for an extra comfort, respect and safety at a slightly higher price

Thank you. First positive answer I got so far.. every one says "parts are not available.." , "parts are super expensive..", "you better have a fuel bowser tail u cause it drinks fuel..", "no market value.." the list goes on.. I hv got enough negativity frm my friends and family I'm nearing the point where I'm abt to give up on the idea of ever buying a Peugeot.. People who have Peugeot's and use them on their day to day life.. can you please give some comments...

HI, I agree with Harshan, we had 406 for 3 1/2 yrs as a daily drive which use to do an average of 60km's per day.

If you are to buy a similar or somewhat equivalent Jap car how much do u hv to pocket out more, so for the little trouble

if u r to think, u hv the price benefit on the purchase price.

the famous guys for the Peugeot repairs are now at Battaramulla Pelawatte, so if u r close by u r lucky.

If u could get hold of low mileage, well maintained with records and a manual you should be happy as Larry.

I think its recommendable even as a first car.

Good Luck

Hi few facts:

1) Whether European or Japanese, parts at agents are sky high. People say Jap parts are very cheap.....yes cheap out side the agents but mostly those are duplicates / fakes. So the key is whether you want to maintain at the agents or not irrespective of Jap or Euro.

2) 406 is a lovely car for sure. Style, comfort, power, stability belongs to a completely different league compared to Japs.

If you can buy a well maintained one and if you are willing to spend 40% more on fuel and 40% more on maintenance compared to Jap, go for it. You won't regret. The prices have come down. You should be able to grab a good deal if you can afford about 1.5M.

Chears.

Thanks.. This Peugeot is had 2 owners, done abt 111k, maintained by carmart till about 6 months ago and then by that place in Battaramulla. No problems except for that link replacement. Interior and exterior in very good condition. And I can get it for 1M. Is it worth it ?

Dude... i recently got a D9 2.0L as my first car. I too went through all these hassles from the ppl outside about parts, the 2nd hand market and all. but finely i made up my mind to go for it and now am in love with it :-) .. but do consider about the fuel consumption and the maintenance of the car before you making a decision. My one does 7km/l in City and couldn't see much different in outer city but still the handling, the performance and the look all goes beyond that for me. So it will all depend upon your financial situation and what you going to expect from the car, and also how will you going to maintain the car. obviously this will need much attention that a jap one to keep at the top condition and you will see a big different in performance if you made a little crap at the repair. Am too doing the repair at this place in pelawatta and the guys are really professional and reasonable so you dont have to worry about the repairs, if you not going to use this much at outer city (coz not every mechanic can touch this car). So this is all from my side about 406.... good luk dude :-)

Since it's a D8 and mileage 100 + I would say if you could get little below that it should be ok,

alternatively the B9 English no's are moving around 11 to 15 a good G or H numbered.

We recently sold the HQ no for 13/25 with 88 on the clock.

Keep negottating and why don't you go up to the Pelawatte guys and ask what they know for sale as well.

Good Luck

Can someone please give me the contact number for the Pelawatte spot.

Am not sure whether the forum rules allow to post contact numbers and such... so ill message you the details. Better if you go on a weekday becoz the place was full of vehicles on a weekend i went. And note that on Tuesday they are closed.

Just to get things clear is there two Peugeot experts in Battaramulla area ? THROVE AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING (Aruna) and French Lion Auto mobiles ?

Yes. The Throve is in baththaramulla koswaththa (near thalangama police station) and the French Lion AM is in Pelawatta (Near the stadium). Both the places are running by the persons who left Carmart.

Guys can you please tell me what are things to look out for when buying a Peugeot 406. I know i should have asked this earlier. Like what are the common things that could go wrong, and something like a checklist from your experiences.

hi bro

the D8 had a persistent problem with the ECU; I am referring to the 1.8 L6A engine which is an 8-valve unit with 97 HP. It has a magnetti marelli control unit and many in sri lanka with this engine were replaced during the warranty period. pls check the history with agents.

the cooling fans on the earlier versions also had issues and were modified later. the evaporator coils also have an average life of 2-3 years approx. clutches are also generally hard due to the design of mechanism. steering stifness is normal. the idle air control unit tends to get clogged up frequently and needs servicing regularly, to eliminate rough idling and slight black smoke. fuel pumps also have a tendency to give up after some time, but not on all cars. the fuel gauges on the cluster do sometimes play up as well.

headlights also need cleaning after a couple of years; the D9 had problems with fungus in them, even on new cars.

otherwise, suspension is bulletproof, with the ocassional link failure. the L6A D8 also came with a heavy duty suspension made for the kenyan market and a factory fitted metal sump guard.

whatever you do, keep away from the AL4 automatics; they have issues.

to sum up: a nice car which suits our roads, as long as it is not a UK import which had the softer suspension and general issues due to the hot climate.

good luck!
