Hey guys,

I m new to autolanka and just thought this would be the ideal place to get some expert advice on a car. I have plans to buy a 1998 toyota starlet (4 door) for 14.5 laks its a pretty decent car, done some 96000k and i m hoping to buy it soon. Please do leave a comment about the car. Is this a fair price? Any major issues with this model? What would I have to look out for during inspection? I have also noticed that there are not many starlets out there as nissan march s during my car hunt....why is this?

Cheers :)

and when considering the extras the car have do you think it still costs too much?

Hey man, It's the "normal" price for a v.good condition starlet. Make sure it's accident free, and still has the original paint. Many Sri Lankans, for some reason, seems to be interested on the number of owners. First owner, second owner cars are in high demand. ( I don't think like that, actually that's a stupid concept. But it matters when you go to sell a vehicle). What's the colour? usually non-white cars a little expensive.

So if the car is in v.good condition, accident free, original paint, first/second owner, a nice colour, Auto, Alloys - then 14/50 is the going price.

Yeah, Starlet is not common in the market. Most ppl fall in love with the car as it has good fuel economy, comfort and a nice pickup (for a small car)

Infact, I am in the process of selling my Starlet (already confirmed the buyers) for good 30-40k less than your buying price. But mine lacks Alloys, and has evidence of a small crash... If my car didn't miss those two, I too woudn't have settled for less that 14/40 - 14/50.

It has a metallic bluish silver colour and It is the original paint, exterior is v. good i must say, only a few barely visible scratches (which you must expect in a 1998 car) but the interior dont look pretty (i mean the seats, the original seat covering looks like shit!) and the guy is the second owner.

Good thing you mentioned about the pick up, I was told that having the A/C on really drains out the power from the 1.3L engine.....is it so bad?

Machang, ep91 is a real good car. my uncle owns one. fuel economy is also perfect(15-18kmpl manual gear). But better check the meter reading again. And also 14 inch alloys??? my uncle put 13 inch alloys and it was a mess when running on un-leveled roads. the whole mudguard got cracked because of the wheels. Try to buy a manual, non-modified car. Cheers!!!

The a car had a good ground clearance (wonder if they are really 14'') anyways thnks for the post brthr...

No problem with the auto tranny. It does little lower than manual. Very good car and no major issue. Good pulling power at this class. Much better performance than march. 14.5 is rthe presant market for a good condition one. Concern the interior more than the exterior.

all the best and good luck bro.

Hey bro, don't think serious on my post, all round it's a REAL GOOD CAR. ground clearance is ok. But, before you buy it, put two or three persons on back seat and go on a ride. Because 14inch alloys may hit with mudguard when shocks working. cheers!!!

Yeah, pick up is not good while the AC is on... I switch off the AC whenever I need a quick pickup. However, I must say that for a 1.3 engine, pick up is really good (when AC is off).

That would be because of High Profile tyres or worn out shock. My cousin had a Starlet with 14" tyres 175/65/14. No rubbing even with 5 people
