Body Permit Vehicles

Guys I would like to share your valuable thoughts about body permitted vehicles. I tried to by Bighorn body permit jeep but I am not sure about the documents. Lot of people said there is a risk of buying that. Pls. share what are the documents to be checked and method of verifying the same. Also need to know the value of the vehicle having 1997 body.

As long as the chassis is from a legitimate vehicle registered with the RMV and has the relevant registration for it, the type of body fitted shouldnt be a issue AFAIK. Also check if the engine number matches to the one on the book.

But if its a complete vehicle that came into the country on a body permit (which would mean it'll be a cut/bud), you should probably stay away from it.

I don't know to comment on vale though.

Just pondering: cut/bud normally refers to vehicles like cars that dont have a actual chassis-frame that come in on body permits, yes? in which case the body-chassis are the same. This is where all the issues pop up on cut-bud cars etc right?

But on SUV's pickups etc the body literally can be removed and replaced with no effect on the chassis(number). Isnt this how all those "L" plate defenders got on the road (legally?)... If so, and presuming Shehan123's has a legitimate chassis from a old trooper or whatever fits the bighorn, his vehicle should have no issues right?

Look at the registration book. It should carry a note saying "New body installed" or the equivalant in Sinhala. This means that is an RMV approved body permit and an installation. You may also check with RMV when it was last brought for their inspection after the installation of the new body. Make sure the engine number that is actually there on the engine is as same as what is there in the book. The price I guess should be somewhere around 3.4M-3.7M.

The owner should also have the body permit with him. Which will have a number of stamps from the RMV. Make sure all these are in order before you invest a big sum since the market is flooded with illegally imported bodies.

Bringing this up since im looking for a jeep.

checked out a few vehicles and all 'body permitted' vehicles have new chassis as well. But with the chassis number bearing area from the original chassis welded to the new chassis. Is this legal??

Also some are running on chassis numbers which are originally from 2 door vehicles and now have 4 door bodies .. legal??

all ( or 99% ) of 32 - jeeps which has coil spring suspension ( 3.1D bighorns, LC lj79's Patrol Y60's ) are with new chassis,

if these vehicles are not legal , how come even leasing companies give leases and can be sold freely in the market.

im not sure if the body has the chassis number marked anywhere...i wondered about this as well...if as long as the chassis and the engine is from the original vehicle replacing the body shouldnt be a problem..if it was a 4 person carrier before and changed to a 7 seater then you might get into trouble since the book carries the number of passengers...

there were special police teams deployed that were stopping and checking jeeps at one time. Some were confiscated. So its not simple as it sounds.

checking for a valid chassis no can be dne easily ,police is nt able locateda chassis no faults...........

if the vehicle met with an accident then theres a problem ..

as i knw any vehicle has only Chassis no and Engine no...............

if its RMV approved Body Permit i think no need to worry.........

bt need to check whether the Chassis is Budded o nt..........
