Question

Hey guys,

I've got 17s on my car. And as a result, I'm not too happy with the pounding the car's getting from the various potholes and bumps on our roads. Now, the stock size my car came with are 16s. So I'm thinking of downgrading from 17s to 16s. Just wanted to know whether I can expect a big difference in ride comfort, or will it be a small change, and not worth the downgrade?

Thanks

17 down to 16 you will notice only a small difference I think but this will also depend on what profile the tyre is (side wall height). A bigger profile will give you a bit more comfort.

Yes, the lower the profile the more you feel the road (bumps)

I've got 225/45/17 now. Want to get it down to 215/55/16. And more than comfort I'm worried about the suspension. Each pothole I go through sends a jolt up me spine..... :(

Well with the 225/45 you side wall height is about 101mm whereas the 215/55 will give you 118mm so thats 17mm extra height on the side wall. That might have impact on the comfort. Cant say for sure how big it might be.

Oh ok. Is there anything I can do to make it easier for the car? (Apart from driving slow on a bumpy roads that is.... :)) Or will I have to drop the tyre size down to 15s?

Sometimes a different brand of tire can change the ride comfort - you may consider upgrading. Also, tire pressure makes a difference - try reducing the pressure a little bit (note, this may affect fuel economy/tire wear).

What type of tyre brands do you recommend? And I assume dropping the tyre pressure by around two psi won't create any other problems right? Considering the side wall height is so small?

Is this for the Vitz? Switch from low pro to normal balloon tires, while lowering the rim size or switch to touring tire from the 'sports tire' you maybe currently using.

No, this is not him.... :) I'm using his account cause I had trouble registering.

What are differences between a touring tyre and a sports tyre? I think I have the sports version.
