Im looking for a vehicle in the 2.0M~2.5M price range, I was to go for a Sedan, preferably Toyota 121 (the obvious choice for srilankan :) ) after the tax cut. But still a good 121 seems a bit far from that range.

As some compact SUVs of YOM 2000~ are in that price range, I was considering Honda HR-v. I have few questions related to this which I think you can help me with.

1. Since I actually looked for a Sedan, will there be major differences like in Comfort, Resell, Fuel Economy, Space, Repair/spare costs etc. ?

2. HR-V seems to be priced much less than slightly larger CR-V & other similar models, any reason for that?

3. How is the ride? as some compact SUVs have that bumpy ride compared to sedans, especially in long journeys.

4. Any common issues i should be aware of?

Also please let me know if theres any other models (SUV/sedan) I should consider in that price range.

Thanks.

For this price range you can go for Honda es series if you are really interested in sedan. HRV is not that bad in riding. Normally SUV s are bit bummpy than sedans.

If you are going for HRV Auto, see whether the gear box is properly maintained.

All the best bro.

Thanks for the speedy reply.

yes ES's also seem to be good. Are all ES1, ES5, ES8 are made in japan? cos heard ES5 comes from singapore market. Hows the fuel consumption compared to 121 maybe?

About CVT box, by using right oil & changing 15k intervals can cure the so called problem of judder at low speed ??

BTW I see some Mazda axela under 2.7M could it be a sign that axela wil get down to under 2.5M, or will 2.6M+ be the minimum its going to get?

Thanks.

Just curious is HRV 4WD or 2 WD....? CRV comes in 4WD

It seems HRv comes with an automatic 4wd, without a manual selector. Most of the time it will be a front wheel drived vehicle.

from wiki :

" .... The Real Time 4WD system comes from the Honda CR-V and uses utilizes a Dual hydraulic Pump Rear Differential where the 4WD system is hydraulically activated when the front wheels lose traction. The HR-V also uses enhanced drive shafts and suspension. Variations were produced for Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, the Pacific Rim and for its home market of Japan. The HR-V was revised in 2002 with some exterior styling changes and a new interior. Ahead of its time in terms of design for pedestrian safety, the HR-V seats four people and includes modern safety features such as ABS brakes with EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution), dual SRS (supplemental restraint system) airbags, as well as other features such as electric mirrors, .....

Dear Experts,

I'm also planning to go for a HR-V. But I have following questions in my mind.

Please be kind enough to share your thoughts/experience on below.

1.0 As I know manufacturing of HR-Vs went till 2006 and stopped.

However I could not find any HR-Vs in Sri Lanka which were manufactured after 2000.

Is there any reason for this?

2.0 How is the fuel economy of HR-Vs?

3.0 Any known problems of automatic transmission HR-Vs?

Thank you very much.

Hope I can share sth with you on above 02 points.

I have seen 2003 HRV as well but very rare, dont know the reason (may be high price increase in that era ??)

Manual HRV (2 WD) does 10-11kmpl with AC in normal traffic condition.

Overall, I find this as very good machine and loads of fun to drive with good power, great handling

and higher visibility when driving.

Good luck with your hunting.

Really? 10kmpl ? seems a bit far fetched for a relatively big/heavy petrol vehicle in traffic.

Yes dear, even I didn't believe when buyer said it works more than 10 KMPL,

Tested it twise with full tank, both results shows above 10 km.

Hope any other user will endorse this.

cheers

Actually can confirm the 10kmpl. Used a manual 2wd for 3 years - economy was unbelievable. Used to do 16+ on the outstation routes - not kidding at all.

You are quite right. First of the string of duty hikes started under te very first blue-red budget in 2004. Plus HRV wasn't that popular compared to the IO, X-Trail, Cami etc.

Dear kumaras and Dilesh, Thank you very much for your quick responses.

Make sure you get a manual considering the hassle of this auto gear box which seems to be unniversal issue .You may consult few auto users or just go tru HRV reviews iif wish to go for ann auto.

still I cant figure why HR-V is not that popular and has lower resell value compared to similar vehicles (especially CR-V) even with VERY good fuel consumption figures ???

In my opinion, boxy shape of HRV does not attrack many and also it has less off road ability comapred to CRV Further more, it is not continued production.

Actually I bought it un-regged and in the 3 years I used it replaced a rear brake washer. That was it. - Parts / filters were available from the usual Honda spot in Panchi and used to run it on Mobil 1 with Mobile fully synth gear oil as well. Serviced at cl**np**k. Pretty reliable vehicle on the whole much like most Honda EFI's.

Cheers,

PS:- Also have the PDF service manual somewhere if someone wants it. Good to have as a backup as all dismantling and maintenance procedures are detailed in it.
