Hi Guys,

Any idea of the second hand market of KIA's? i went to check the new Cerato, which is 4.2 mil fully loaded with sun roof and leather interior brand new. It also got options most japanese cars in the range dont come with. How do you recon the second hand market would be after about 3 years of usage? i dont expect it to be toyota like but also dont want to be stuck with an unsellable car

Some feedback on Kia cars would also be good

Kia Motors Corporation is one of the two car brands of Hyundai of South Korea. It has always been a marginal brand. Its stable mate, Hyundai USA, has a reputation for high quality cars like the Sonata and Genesis. Kia sells “low rent” cars and SUV nameplates like the Sorento and Rio. As GM and Ford have already discovered, it is expensive to maintain multiple brands and storied car names, including Pontiac, Saturn, and Mercury, are disappearing. Most Kia cars sell for $14,000 to $25,000. Hyundai has several cars in the same price range (LINK). Hyundai’s Sonata has quickly become one of the best-selling cars in America, and its Genesis flagship model competes with mid-sized BMWs and Mercedes. The parent company will take a page from several other global car companies and dump its weakest brand.

wtf?

sonata and high quality somehow doesn't seem to fit together :)

recently saw a 5th gear episode on kia and vw hatches...

i don't think these are such bad cars...sorento for example seems to be holding pretty ok considering it's origins

and i don't think any car is "un-sellable"...just that depreciation would vary depending on the make and model :)

well the cars are good.. no doubt.. but his concern is the 2nd market... which is not there for kia vehicles in sri lanka..

If there is NO second hand market do these used cars end up in junkyards????

Of course there is a market just that it wont be anywhere close to a more mainstream brand.

can you by like a used sorento for dirt cheap here?

you can buy one of these for much cheaper than a mainstream brand and you'd have to get used to "depreciation" a lot more on these than on a mainstream one.

simple as that.

i love the looks of the new Kia Cerato... its really awesome & there's a M/T base model without sunroof & leather interior which would costs about 3.5mil(roughly). does it worth to buy a Kia for that range??? im not concerned about the 2nd hand value, i just wanna know whether its reliable or not

oneday when i was at my garage getting CV's replaced...saw a kia rio in pretty bad shape...

chatted up with the mechanics there and asked for their view on kias

they were saying it's a load of trouble cos it's got quite a bit of sensors and electronics and they don't hold up well for engine washes compared to the japs...

this maybe an isolated incident but i was wondering whether it was our maka basses who have ruined these cars...

a colleague had a kia hatch long years ago... he even used to transport bricks when the masons ran short of it while building his house... and mind you he abused it pretty well... Until the company sold it... it didn't have any major issues :)

it was a kia pride i think..

The key Cerato i went to see at the show room has the following

1. Multi function

2. Triptronic/paddle shift

3. Trip computer

4. Push button start

In addition, leather seats and sunroof could be added and imported for 4.2 mil incl vat

The Kia brand is not disappearing worldwide as far as I know, only in the USA where it doesn't even matter anyway. I haven't heard of any reliability issues, the Sorento is considered one of the best in its class I believe. To me Kia feels better than Hyundai, I never associated Hyundai with high quality (just plastic quality), and I had no idea they were part of the same group.

in top gear there was a comparison as to which korean car is the best & they have recommended Kia as the best if im not wrong..

I don't know how good the Sonata is, but Hyundai is not what it was 10 years ago. They've made great strides in both quality and reliability.

Dude, you really need to take a ride in my car. :D Ain't boasting, but it's not as bad as you'd think.

And btw, Top Gear's reasonably priced car is a KIA C'eed now... don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing though. <_<

And on topic, dunno about KIAs rangerover, but my Hyundai was worth 2.5 mil back in 2006. It's worth 1.85 mil as of now.

Good way to make up your mind is to compare what recon unreg cars you can get for that money. Axio-X will cost the same and an Axela will cost clsoe to 0.5million cheaper. Then ofcource you have the Belta, Fit Aria, vios etc in that budget.

kia make some decent cars like cee'd now. but before this current generation their cars were not quite good. there are lot of bad images of yester kias left in sri lankan minds and unlike a toyota going wrong when a specific non-toyota vehicle goes wrong then sri lankan people attribute that as a general problem with the relevant brand. so they get highlighted than other main stream brands. with that mind set i do not think that kia will hold it's value as good as jap cars. rangerover you should really consider a fully loaded mazda axela mk2.

But isnt the mk2 above the 5 mill range? my budget is max 4.5. I am also considering the petrol BMW E46 facelift, a suzuki grand vitara 2006 (i might be able to slightly extend my budget for this) and a Honda civic fd1

i think if you go through the right channels then you should be able to get an axela mk2 for your budget. beemer is good but i wouldn't pay that kind of money to what is no more than a compact car that is two generations old. (but that's just me) civic is a good choice but i have not seen any around coming reconditioned (quite rare). not an SUV fan so no comments on the suzuki. sometimes i wonder whether the 350z convertible parked in darin's car sale seems right for you :D
