Hi all ,

Long time reader first time poster here.

What are the OBD code readers available to buy in Sri Lanka?specially good in Japanese, Korean and Chinese vehicles ? and how much do they cost?

Is Carman scanner available to buy in SL?

How much does it cost to get ECU scanned from an agent or from an independent place ?

Is ECU remapping or Chip tuning done in Sri Lanka?

Thanks in advance

no offense but if you have been a long time reader of AL...most of your queries have popped up before and have been answered :P

anyways...

The car make doesn't really matter as long as it's either OBD1 or OBD2 compliant. Some cars can be forced on to the diagnostic mode and codes can be obtained without using a special code reader.

On the code reader....I'm not sure where you can buy one in SL but you get relatively cheap code readers on ebay. I have seen these units around 20k local and even north of that depending on brand, features etc...

some places does "ECU scanning" for free or for a nominal rate...at least a place called bru*e moto**orts did that sometime ago and maybe they still do it.

those guys charge 6500 buck northwards for full checking and any repairs minus parts if needed if i'm not wrong

agents will charge similar fee if not a tad more... at one time toyota agents quoted 13k or so my car but that was about 2 years ago..

ECU remapping and tuning too is done by zakie but i'm not too sure they do a full remap...from what i've heard it's rather adopting certain pre-made maps

maybe someone can correct me if i'm wrong

hope that helps :)

None taken ,My apologies

What I meant was a scanner with adapters for Asian vehicles which does not have the obd2 connector (without needing to bridge pins and counting the blinks)

The best one I have worked with older Asian cars is 'CarMan scanlite ' Which will cost around 3 lahks , It does component activation ,module programming etc

This covers all most every Asian cars and their control modules ABS,Air bag etc

So I was wondering if there is anything cheaper out there

Thank you very much for your information ,Really appreciate them

i have a 93 corolla sprinter...having an engine light illuminating issue as i type this...

it has an obd1 port...

bridging the pins and counting the blinks is dead easy and quite accurate...

to my limited knowledge...i don't think an OBD1 scanner will give you any more info...just makes the process easier

please correct me if i'm wrong...

i counted my blinks and found that my knock sensor is not working as it should...

couldn't get to it today as i need to remove the intake manifold to access it...

gonna be my weekend project :)

if you haven't checked ebay...give it a shot!

you get pretty cheap deals there and obd1 scanners tend to be a lot cheaper...

you might even get a good deal on a used one :)

Rs.6500 for ECU scan? This is scan for Check light / error codes right.. Normally if the guarge is femilier with you they do it free of charge in most of the cases. And in M** city they did it free of charge for me since check light came after the service. Staffor charged me around 2K - 3K about a year back (dont remember exact price)

they call it EFI tune up...most places offer the scan for free afaik...bruce' place did the scan for free and tune up was 6500 bucks

can't give too many details here due to forum rules...

toyota didn't offer a free scan for me but they qouted the sum i mention for a full tuneup

besides...mine is obd1...don't need the scan tool to get the codes out :)

Dead right ,just makes the process easier with OBD1 .

but with OBD2 its bit different, some newer Asian cars are notorious with scanners . I have encountered this specially with Korean vehicles and some Japanese cars as well, Plus most of the cheap scanners only covers from 2001 onwards (2004 diesel) and they don't cover ABS, Air bag etc, I haven't worked with Chinese cars so far

Autel does a scanner for Japanese vehicles for a decent price but don't know much about it. So I Thought maybe some cheap Chinese/Thaiwan imports must be out there .

What exactly they do for a "EFI tune up" mate? except for cleaning and couple of adjustments there is not much to do isn't it

yep... but i think since your average garage guy can't handle this and most folks would be scared to do a DIY even on an OBD1 system...they can afford to charge folks!

and i've heard that multiple errors are at times to properly ID and fix...especially if you don't have a 100% fool proof way to test the part in question

45,000 for the chip and custom tuning. mine was economy based map for lower RPM including compatability with 90 octane. beyond around 4500rpm where VTEC was set to be kicking in, he set it to a performance based map with only 95 octane recommended. my cut off was increased upto 8200 rpm from the 6800 in the stock ECU. as for the figures i used to consistently get 11-12 km/L in rush hour traffic. as for performance i could keep up with some ViRS (used to get beaten by some as well) but managed to beat some Vis. so i think that power should have been around 120-125hp from the stock car's 115hp.

I picked up an Autoboss V30 (original assembled in China) from a direct importer for a tad under 200k about 6-7 months ago. Carman is supposed to be a more comprehensive but more expensive. The Korean unit used to be around 500k while the Chinese ones are considerable more economical.

Quite a few Chinese clones available in the market fairly cheap.

For a private vehicle owner, its a better option to go to a workshop unless you plan to make it sort of a hobby.

That means there is no Support or updates isn't it? I haven't worked with Autoboss V30 but heard it had problems with GDI engine (Mitsubish & Volvo)

Yes ,as you said CarMan VG+ is supposed to better than Autoboss , but twice as expensive .I have worked with CarMan Lite which has limited features , But still pretty good with almost all the Asian vehicles.

Is launch x431 available in SL

:) its not just for personal use mate

Many thanks

Dear Friend,

I also was searching one OBD Scanner for JDM vehicle. Finally I found one .

I have one Scanner and one code reader at my home. But none of them are not work for JDM vehicle. Both are works for OBD1 and OBD2 vehicles

Before 2010 all JDM vehicles are MOBD not OBD. If they make for Export then they will put OBD2. both connectors are same and two different system. My one of friend manufacturing Scan tools for JDM vehicles. If you need more information about that PM me

What a B.S. reply.....

First of all there is nothing called MOBD.

There's OBD I, OBDII(present U.S. standard), EOBD(European) and the japanese JOBD.

The JDM vehicles did not use one system until 2010. There was a mix of systems used such as OBDI II and JOBD. While the U.S. standardized OBD II in 96, some japanese cars used OBDI (exports and domestic) till the early 2000s. The present standard used in Japan is JOBD.

Do you have a speific vehicle to scan? Not sure about the system for your Alfa since I don't know the year but it's probably EOBD. Locally there aren't any AFAIK in the consumer price range.

If you have a way of getting one down this would be the most affordable solution.

http://www.amazon.com/Autel-MaxiDiag-JP701-Diagnostic-Scan/dp/B001LHXUI0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1297531042&sr=8-1

It would be sufficient to work on a JOBD or EOBD car (man. specific codes). Although it won't be as helpful on an OBDII it should still be able to give you the basic codes. If you have OBDI then youy would have a little bit of a hard time finding a unit as you would need to find the connectors for your car as OBDI connectors are not standardized as OBDII is.

This for my friend who has the garage in Seeduwa. Things have come to a point now that life will be easier with a scanner in hand.

Alfa is still ok without the scanner. For he BMW, 'list member' MadMMx has the bells and whistles and he is a great help. Cleared all the error codes on the DME yesterday.

Will check up on your link,. THanks
