I bought a 2003 320d with 39,000 km on the clock for 5,500,000 last week. But the car was in perfect condition. Given the rarity of what ur looking for, it might demand a slightly higher price. But given the vehicle is GS number, you should not pay more than 5,500,000

Also make sure that any fluid and filter changes (gearbox filter) have been done as required on the tiptronic box. The box is supposed to be more fuel efficient than the manual strangely and its a six speed if I remember right but you need to make sure its been maintained right.

On the plus side - you will have the option of installing the BMW paddle shift onto the steering wheel which is ultra cool !! :)

The older e46 (99-early 02) the pre facelift one was known to have diesel pump issues and turbo's going pop. But if you pump 95 octane and change oil every 5-6000 Km without waiting for the recommended 15,000 Km and dont drive as if you stole it, it will serve you well. But since most of these were bought under the permit, initial owners are not the type who would take care of BMW's as they should be. So look for a well maintained one

The facelift diesels are only similar to the older sibline mainly in the exterior design. The engine is a totally upgraded 150bhp common rail. Only known issue is related to swirl flaps. But you can buy blanks for $10 dollars and fix it. Proper maintainance and care would not give you any issue. but the car is about 1.5 - 2 million more expensive than the older one. But note, these are no toyota corolla's

You mean to say Super Diesel??

Actually to add to that its yes and no - the filter costs and change intervals are higher than the petrol but the economy on the diesels is staggering. I would guess sort of cost neutral weighing more to diesel :) On the older ones apparently the injectors are a pig to take out but on a 2002 which should be a facelift common rail it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I do hear that tiptronics need to be taken care of properly but they're quite durable. You know you also have the option of wiring and fitting in the paddle shift (F1 style) on the tiptronics !!

Actually to add to rangerover - yes stick to super diesel - more pull and pickup and better economy but try to stick to reliable sheds - I used to always go to LauXXs Kohuwela for super diesel when I had the 320d - too many horror stories to do with some of the other smaller sheds with regard to chucking engine oil into their diesel

I was also told that always to pump diesel from sheds situated at higher ground elevations. Sheds in locations that get flooded tend to have corroded fuel tanks and could significantly affect the quality of fuel. I was shown this at the experts on a older e46 which had come for the diesel pump replacement. Unfortunatly my usual shed at alexandra place is prone to get flooded. Would have shift to laughs next time or lioc shed at senanayake junction borella.

Also if this is the car that was advertised on hitad couple of months ago, i would stay away from it as I was informed that this car met with a huge accident and was totaly rebuilt. Including some parts of the engine. I saw this car once and it sounded like a lorry compared to mine and was told that its because certain panels and dampers in the engine bay are missing. So rebuilding wasnt thorough

Whoa. !! That's interesting - this would be the GS registered one ? Was it rebuilt by the expert ? Have seen some pretty messed up cars repaired by the chap - but his repair seems pretty good and its done on an alignment rig so it can't be bad ? There was a pretty bad E60 320d 5 series new model that he did a complete front end rebuild on. Thought the work was very decent and he actually flew back to Germany to get instructions on how to rebuild it !! :) He was also rebuilding Jay's E36 M3 a while back though that repair seemed to be taking forever. Rule of the thumb is that quite a few E36's out in the market have had major repairs done on them at the experts :)
