Napster
Guys… There are so many unreg’ vehicles that come with factory fitted TV/NAVI/Bluetooth from Japan… As far as I know TV and navigation will be useless here… And those sets come with very good brands like Panasonic, JVC but most of them are again in Japanese… Further as far as I know you have to pay additional tax of about 30k for the unit itself but to find them not working in SriLanka… What do you guys think? My opinion. If you want Aesthetics , go with the factory fitted one. If you want Functionality find some vehicle with Audio less and install fully functional one here in SL. But I don't understand why we cannot use the TV and Navigation sets that's there in Japan, here... If i am right we are importing the TV's from there right... like Samsung, LG and all... so how come these systems in cars wont work? All tv's imported are produced for the export markets. The reason we cant watch tv on japanese units is because of some PAL NTSC issue (not sure exactly what it is). All JDM radios have also a similar issue of not having full range. If you are investing in an aftermarket set you should always go for a reputable brand. Cheap ones tend to have very gaudy screens and may not last long. I installed a chinese brand for my old car, where the radio switches of during reverse gear when reverse camera is activated. This doesnt happen in original or high quality sets

I went to several car sales around Colombo and I saw most of the unreg vehicles which are on sale are equipped with Japanese setups… For radios however…. they have a small gadget that you could fix to the antenna input where you could convert the radio into a full band… I used it sometime back and it works and fairly cheap too…

So, as rangerover said, you can't watch PAL on an NTSC system and vice versa. However, you can on a multisystem unit. So, if the units in the cars are multisystem, you might have no issue. Don't really know whether converters would work properly, you might simply end up with a black and white picture.

Does the unit changers according to the service provider?

But there was a recent thread with regard to GPS navi systems. Check that out, might shed some light.
