No bro, all markets other than JDM has the Mazda3. And yes, the Axela has a 1.5L engine which is slightly more powerful than the 1.6L engine in the Mazda3. Fuel consumption wise, probably vice versa.

Yes ,Axela 1.5 engine is ahead around 2HP than 3's 1.6 version. Axela comes with high quality fabric interior

while Mazda3 mostly have leather interiors.

Also Axela (2004-2009) has rear drum brakes and Mazda 3 has rear disk brakes.

Apart from that in most of the countries,Mazda 3/Axelas have 2.0L & 2.3L powered engines. These are not available here due to high tax rates prevailing in Sri Lanka for high capacity engined cars.

Is it tax reasons or simply the 'fuel efficiency and mileage' conscious buyer of SL? :) Cuz AFAIK the tax rate is same from 1.5L upto 3L or so in petrol category?

brackets are < 1l; 1l to 1.6l; 1.6l - 2l; 2l - 3l; > 3l

but tax rates for 1.6l-2l and 2l-3l are the same... so crossing the 1.6l barrier is expensive

edit: above is import tax; there is also the semiluxury / luxury annual tax; which I think the changeover point is 2l; but that cost is pretty negligible compared to the purchase cost.

Yes,it has some differences area to area.

This is not by the engine itself ,but diffrent ECU programming according to the tight regulations in

Emission Controls in respective areas.(Eg: In Europe Mazda3 ,less power).

However this is negligable for a driver.

But I've seen all tax tables being put out in cc, not L and also all documents regarding the vehicle being in cc, such as our previous Tercel was listed as 1330cc and the new Yaris as 1298cc. But for sake of easy representation, people round off both to 1.3l in saying the capacity. AFAIK, the Mazda3 is 1598cc < 1.6l :)

yes, customs documents are using cc, but 1000cc = 1l and sometimes it's easy to talk in l values

these tax brackets are the same in every country (the tax rates are what change), so manufacturers try to get as close to the limit as possible. So a car generally described as 1.6l would generally fall into the <1.6l tax bracket.

(a different example: I have seen cigarette packets with 19 cigarattes, which are 25% cheaper than the 20 pack, because the cigarette tax system in that country was based on pack sizes!)

Yea that's what I said too, we talk in l cuz it's easy but cuz of the cc system of the customs, things are done more accurately. :)

Exactly, so there is no tax difference for the 1498cc Axela and 1598cc Mazda3, only point they'd differ in price was how much they initially cost. wink.gif
