I'm looking at a Mini 1000cc. I was told that 1000cc get heated with A/C in traffic and that is very common specially for 1000cc engine Mini's.

Can anybody confirm??/

It is true though mainly when stuck in the traffic jams. One the open roads no major issue. Have one myself but don't really use it as a day runner. Has anyone been able to find a fix for this ? Oil Cooler ..etc ?? Both fans + coolant don't seem to do the trick.

Cheers,

No this is untrue. I'm a daily Mini runner since 1998. You will not face any over heating issues if you use;

1. 74C thermo

2. a good secondary electric exhaust fan with a genuine mini fan switch

3. a good fan leaf (without bends)

4. good radiator coolant

5. have the rubber like cover between body and radiator

6. have the correct and genuine radiator cap

7. have the over flow canister

8. engine is well tuned

9. correct spark plug. I tried a set of NGKs (BPR6ES) which i bought from the popular mini store here and removed as it increased the heating limit. Denso seems good.

10. radiator is cleaned

11. have the correct radiator. 3 core/2 core depending on the engine

12. A/C is regulated

13. no slipping fan belts

14. use the correct alternator. if you're using a Jap alternator, make sure that it does not create an extra load to the engine.

15. a good water pump

Hi GMI,

Actually mine is the full setup from a Jap mini transferred into the car - all wiring and all bits so can I just ask

>>No this is untrue. I'm a daily Mini runner since 1998. You will not face any over heating issues if you use;

1. 74C thermo --> Am using the one that came with the engine - no change do u need to change it ?

2. a good secondary electric exhaust fan with a genuine mini fan switch --> The jap car came with the electric secondary fan - fan switches on fine - direction is also correct (fan comes on a little higher than 50% on the heater gauge)

3. a good fan leaf (without bends) --> The primary fan is the 16 blade yellow fan is this ok ?

4. good radiator coolant --> Used wurth

5. have the rubber like cover between body and radiator --> Thats there so no airflow going out problems

6. have the correct and genuine radiator cap - put a new cap

7. have the over flow canister - This I don't have as its a 1000cc engine. Are you refering to the one that is sealed and fits under the wing on the outside ?(ie over the wheel)

8. engine is well tuned - tuned by various people and last tuned by lucky

9. correct spark plug. I tried a set of NGKs (BPR6ES) which i bought from the popular mini store here and removed as it increased the heating limit. Denso seems good. --> AM using a set of iridium denso's which seem fine Whats the model you're using?

10. radiator is cleaned - radiator was cleaned prior to fitting it

11. have the correct radiator. 3 core/2 core depending on the engine - engines a 998 a+ radiator came with the jap car assume its correct ?

12. A/C is regulated - all the a/c fittings are from the original car

13. no slipping fan belts - fan belts are all new - correct size - only one fellow I know has the small alternator belt :)

14. use the correct alternator. if you're using a Jap alternator, make sure that it does not create an extra load to the engine. -> Alternator also came with the jap engine should be correct ?

15. a good water pump -> water pump is brand new

Bottom line is still when hitting heavy traffic the engine heat does go up quite a lot - so much so that I would normally turn the a/c off. Is urs fine in traffic ?

Would appreciate the advice and help. Another close friend of mine has similar issues and he's is a 1275 EFI SPI. Fairly frustrating not being able to get this right.

Thanks,

1. Jap stock minis come with 88C thermo. You need to change it to 74c to suite SL conditions.

2. Fan seems operating correctly. But make sure fan rotates at the correct rev. with time the revolution decreases.

3. 16 blade yellow fan blade is fine, but make sure the blades are not bended outside from top.

4. I use Caltex without mixing water.

5. Perfect

6. Make sure that it is 15psi genuine cap. EFI cap has a rubber sealing inside and carb model doesn’t. if you don’t have the rubber seal, it’ll not suck coolant from expansion canister.

7. Yes. you need to have one if you’re running in Colombo.

8. I recommend Ranil – Kadawatha

9. I use Denso Iridiums in my 1000 auto. Temp stables bit high after I use those, but not overheating. Better to switch to normal Densos and check.

10. Ok

11. Should be ok

12. Ok

13. I think you phoned me to ask the place. Didn’t you?

I use 1.3 EFI, 998cc manual and 998cc auto cars as daily runners. All run without any heating issues after carefully attending to above facts. Ignition timing also matters a lot therefore better getting the car tuned using a timing torch.
