Ah its easy... you just select the car you like, make sure its less than 3 years from the date of manufacture... pay with your credit card, give your shipping address, confirm, take print out of the receipt, on the day of arrival of the ship, go to Port, clear it , on your way home go to RMV, register it, get an insurance, and come home... simple!

Thats how I buy cars online all the time.

It's not as simple as 1-2-3, if it was everyone would be doing it. Get hold of someone inside of Customs, then get all the government circulars you need. Deal with a company that is used to exporting cars to SL, they will be able to guide you for sure.

Whatever you do, you cannot import a car older than 3 years from the date of manufacture. Doubt that for 3000 USD you will get anything decent.

1. You can't pay through credit card. It's government regulation that you remit foreign exchange through the letter of credit. Unless you import through a special permit you have to follow that regulation and submit at least part of CIF value through LC. Unless you follow these regulation customs won't clear your vehicle.

2. Self importing a vehicle is indeed a complicated procedure, which involves lot of time wasting and stress. However there are lot of info in the thread I mentioned. What I get from your reply is that you didn't even bother to read that thread and you want some other to read that for you.

3. FYI, VVTi in the post #5 made a little joke.

laugh.gif Nice one VVTi

What don't you get in that thread amad? And as VVTi said, I don't think it's possible to get any worthwhile car which is less than 3.5 years and RHD for $3000. And your tax won't be based on that value anyway.

Ex: I was offered a Honda Accord Euro 2007 CL7 model with 2L engine for $4700, while normally they're around $10k, cuz the guy didn't want it and moved to a LHD country. Even though it's a real bargain, tax will be very high, cuz they don't tax value we bought at. So afaik, the new tax with the 10% reduction which happened last should be 135% of CIF value (I have older tables after 50% reduction). CIF means the Price of the vehicle (Cost) + Insurance charge (I) + Shipping charge (Freight). If we gave cost, it'd have been very nice, but we don't. In this case, I called St*ff*rd M*t*rs and asked, was told CIF is roughly 2 million Rs. That gives tax of ~2.7M Rs (3M if 10% doesn't apply). So total when clearing would cost around: $4700 real cost + $1000 (not Japan) for I/F = 6.5 lakhs for bringing here + taxes 27-30 lakhs = 33.5-36.5 lakhs. That's just a very rough estimate to give you the idea, more expenses will be there here and there.

This may be hard to understand, but so are the customs website and many threads on it too, due to non centralized nature of info. But nevertheless, there IS a lot of info there, you can't deny that. :)

Why on earth would one need to import a woman, unless that person is an ace loser can cannot get some choice punani in Sri Lanka itself? Have you considered getting one? :)

There are too many limitations with the gift permit, and can't even import anything more than 1.6L or so as I know. And got to find a relation who had worked abroad for some amount of time and prove this much money was sent and so on... If desperate for an old and got resources, yeah, upto 5 years normally. Or maybe 10 if you're lucky? :)

I dont like talking about my personal life. . FYI she was a top of the line model and came with the best headlights. Maintanence is too costly though. Not to meantion the bad DPH (dollar per hour) ratings. I think I'm going to sell this one and buy a chinese one. Heard they retain their market value for a long time and maintaining them is pretty low cost.
