Worth Buying A Hyundai Matrix?

Question

Posted

Hi frnds,

I’m looking for a car with good ground clearance and inside space (leg space) for a price around 1.35mn. Petrol consumption also needs to be at least 9km/L. One of the options available at the moment is Hyundai Matrix (2001 – GLS)). I know that Hyundai’s does not have a good second hand market but have to consider this option based on my main concerns mentioned above.

Please advice me whether this will be a good decision…

What is the normal second hand mkt price of this vehicle?

Does this model has spares available in the market?

How’s avg petrol consumption?

Will that be a good investment for another 2years?

Any other alternatives which suits my requirement?

Thanks in advance…

Well the Matrix is an MPV, so it's kinda like a van. Looks like a van to me anyhow. :)

If it's a car you want, you can always check out a Toyota Starlet. I figure you can find a good one for about 1.3 mil, and it meets almost all your requirements.

Hi

we had a Matrix GLS , it is quiet heavy on fuel. Colombo it did about 4-5 km pl.

Colombo Kataragama and back it did @ 6 km pl. Though some claims it does well I have spoken

to few users and all get around 5 to 6 kmpl. So fuel side is out.

But it is quiet comfortable, leg room yes, Spares bit of an issue as you may be picking up a vehicle that has been in Sri Lankan Roads for about 3 to 5 years.

So sooner or later you need to be replacing some parts, agents would not support as they are imports and

few Panchikawatte shops would bring you down if needed.

market has settled around 1 to 1.35 mil. But with all these other cars coming in to the market now due to lesser duty, I wonder whether that market would stand same in 2 years. May be you need to re think or be happy with a Matrix.

Good luck

Thanks for your valuable info… I was shocked hearing that it did only 6km/L outstation… even a petrol Montero does better I hope. May be the Matrix has a problem with its power to weight ratio…

Regarding spares, doesn’t Hyundai Lanka Ltd import any spare parts? Have u faced any specific troubles (engine, suspension, etc) during ur usage?

No Agents wouldn't support as they don't import this model.

Fuel - I think more than the power to weight its to do with the sensors / and our low quality fuel probably.

I had no specific issues as I bough it unreg for home use and when I realized issues specially with fuel

we sold it after about 5 months.

It may be worth looking at some other options.

As far as I know, Spares are cheap and available with both the agents and Hyundai dealers in Pckwatte!! ... Fuel has been around 10Km/l on the Matrix that I was using , No real issues except suspension needed changing....

Guess there was a rotten egg in the Hyundai Matrix basket

Hi..

Having hands-on experience on a Matrix, I think you shouldnt go for one unless you wish to hold on to it for a long time and have the time and money to attend to the more problem prone MPV than the japanese models.

The problematic areas to my knowledge and experience are the gearbox(on autos), suspension and of course the fuel efficiency. There is an OK 2nd hand market but you will have to bear-up the comments of potential buyers who will condemn the vehicle in all aspects. :angry-smiley-024:

Apart from that its an excellent vehicle in terms of looks, legspace, comfort & options (leather seats, cup holders, foldeable rear seats, map reader lights etc) . So, its a bargain. If the Matrix has really won a place in your heart its best you take a Korean Car expert with you and buy one in good condition for a really low price.

Good luck mate!

Fuel is going to be an issue. 6KMPL will not be good for you. Some one mentioned 10KMPL, I very seriously doubut it. IMO don't by the Matrix.

are you sure it's six? that number seems shockingly low. My tribute gets almost 5 and it's a 6 cylinder and is pretty heavy....

Ok may be a bit more like 7 KMPL at the best nothing more than that. 1.6Ltr and the car is heavy. You actualy can feel the weight :) . The inside and the comfort is good.

Ok, so a quick search on the net showed that the Matrix will do 8 kmpl and above in the city. So, probably about 6 - 7 kmpl in SL.

But, my Tuscani has the same Beta range engine only it's a 2.0l. It's a bit of a heavy car and with me in it will weigh close to 1.5 tons. :D But I get roughly 6.5 - 7 kmpl from mine in city, pumping 95 octane and driving around with a heavy right foot. Plus, it's an auto.

So a well maintained Matrix should give good figures, I figure.
