nowdays in europe they increasingly go for smaller sized engines with forced induction(turbo/super-charged) as oppose to comparable bigger n.a. engines that would make a smilar output all in the name of fuel economy. so in that sense i'd say that turbo charging would actually lead to better fuel economy. but i don't think the same can be said when you try to dump a turbo charger to improve performance further of an already economical car.

quite true, and they might be better in emission as well.

i think they are good on emissions too. nowdays manufacturers are after emissions control even more so than fuel economy. (true, there is a strong co-relation between the two parameters). i think the only moot point for forced induction nowdays is long term durability. even with best new technology i don't think these forced induction units will be as durable as n.a. units in very long term. i think they will invariably require more repair/attention than their n.a. counterparts in the very long term.

Imo, you can't just make this a black and white argument. Turbos are used for a variety of different reasons from what I've read. Trying to figure out whether a n/a or turbo engine burns more fuel is like trying to figure out whether a red truck handles better than a blue truck.
