Surely you don't want to replace the engine after having just converted it? I'm sure there must be a way - why do they tell you you can't reregister it? I was under the impression that certain category English numbers were made available for reregistering?

Well if that's so you should have inquired from a reliable regulatory source if it can be done before swapping the engines. People usually don't convert diesel to petrol or swap bodies without knowing the required paperwork to be done. Now your not only racking up more expenses but wrecking the car. Unless you bought an already converted one and nose dived to this problem.

If non-English numbers were allowed to convert freely it could lead to a worse virus than the body-permit disease that infected the market.

I wonder what people behind you in a shed think when they see a 300- car pumping diesel.

Incase you don't get to convert it to diesel and you sold or don't have the original engine which you had in that Opel, it would be a tough ask to find another gasoline Opel engine. Good luck on your en devour!

Thanks for your comments. It is very difficult to find Opel spare parts in Sri Lanka.Further availble parts are more expensive. As an alternative i have dicided to convert it in to diesel.

The rule is that you need to inform the RMV first and get permission before you do any changes to the vehicle that requires paperwork to be changed, ie, New color scheme and engine/Chassis change. If you did it without permission, you are in a bit of a situation where they will not even bother t proceed and will find you at fault.

They have put a restriction on conversions as Devaka said due to the habit of our people to go beyond reasonable limits. (Body Permit, Vigo/Navarra fiasco, etc)

From what I know, they have stopped issuing 325- numbers as of last year. You are better off putting back the old Opel engine and running it the best way you can and sell it off to someone who will look after the car instead of looking at the economics of it or the 'Bigger car than the Jones's car' factor.

I used a converted Opel for a while (2001) and it was a lovely car, black with 65 plates. Had a 2C Turbo in it and it used to behave like a smaller car. Solid drive. Great car. Plastics used to break all the time though... :)
