jdnet
Hey guys, The turbo unit in the io seems to be leaking oil internally thus causing a few engine issues. I was thinking of removing the turbo unit and trying to fix the problem in the morning. From what the mitsu guys told me it's a seal that tends to go bad. They said I should just replace the whole unit I believe it's nonsense replacing an entire turbo unit because of a little leak from a seal. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and what the solution was. This is going to be my first time working on a turbo charger so I'm not sure what exactly is wrong with the unit. If it's an oil seal can I just replace it and solve the prob?
BLu3HaZe
One hell of an IO you've got hold of! Never had the 'pleasure' of dealing with turbo problems though. Did you come across this? Quote If the lip of either turbo wheel has been rubbing against the seal area on the center housing, you may find a groove worn into the housing. If this is the case, plan on buying a new center housing. In many instances, it is cheaper to buy a new "turbo cartridge" (the center housing with both wheels and shaft preassembled) than it is to try to rebuild a damaged unit. jdnet
Just thought I'd post an update here for anyone who may have an internal oil leak problem in the turbo charger. Check the PCV valve After going through all the parts today before I attempted to take off the turbo charger I found my pcv valve was slightly blocked thus increasing the pressure and sending the oil through the turbo seal (I guess iw was the easiest path for the oil to take). So if you have an oil problem do check the pcv and hoses for signs of blockage and clean the pcv with carb cleaner and use a small pipe brush to clean the hoses. Also make sure to clean up the intake manifold and the injectors.
