the steering locks when you tries to turn it without the key. And it wont release till you put the key in... In your case it probably wont release since its probably jammed in the locked position. Turn/nudge the steering in the opposite direction a bit and then put the key in and switch it on. It should get unlocked.

Also note that turning the steering when the car is not moving (like you tried to before it got locked) is very bad for the steering, as it its exerting a lot of force on the joints etc and will lead to a major repair in the long run. All the best

IIRC on my car I have to jiggle key while in the cylinder and turn the steering wheel at the direction where it got locked while turning the key. I may be run.

OP the locking system is a basic way of preventing car theft. If you lock your steering wheel after you park a thief can't drive your car after hotwiring it. It's actually wierd that people would spend money on immobilizers when they could just lock the steering wheel.

It never occurred to me that steering lock is an effective way to prevent car theft. Now that you said, it's absolutely clear! :P

I feel silly, being aware of the option for years but never really understanding what it was for .. never really bothered to ask anyone, really!

Question is how many of us USE it for that purpose! LOL

sorry for what may be a very naive question; but is car theft by hotwiring happening much in Sri Lanka?

lol obviously not, which is why I had to remove the immoblizers that previous owners had installed in both cars.
