It's not rocket science to realize that there are no "middle man charges" when importing personally.

Why are vegetables cheaper at Mannin Market, Pettah?

 Couldn't have agreed more. At this rate people will start personally importing their vegetables and groceries too.

Anybody know how clearing agent charge for do all paperwork and take out from port? Can you recommend any good person? You know my one of friend import a vehicle(Car) from Japan and he paid clearing agent around Rs.40, 000.

(That vehicle was at the port around one week. And that person who clear the vehicle, said he did talk with his friends at custom and they not charge for your body kit and you have to pay Rs.18, 000.)

The total amount I had to pay for my agent was around 26,000 about two months back. They handled everything inside the port and outside including obtaining of the agent's valuation.

All I had to do was to, initially provide all the documents specified by him, provide the check for the duty amount that was specified by him and on the day it was actually taken out, to go and collect it from a place close to the port exit gate, to which point he had by then brought the car and had it parked.

First of all don't beleive what everything clearing agent says, Physically you can;t hide anything since in several points the car is cross checked before leave the harbour.

Normal rates for clearing is 20000 Rs. My clearing agent charge me 18000Rs for entire process.

ok, he said "for body kit custom will charge 36k but he(clearing man) talk with custom offices and hide it. Then half (18k) need to pay. because the money should give to 6 persons(custom)+clearing man.

When a vehicle is imported by a dealer, they have to pay VAT on sold price. You save this VAT and dealer profit by importing the car on your name.

You select your vehicle from Japan and therefore, you know the exact condition and mileage of the vehicle. Select an accident free original odometer topping condition vehicle. Condition, mileage and accident history of those vehicles are certified by auction houses.
