guys im new to cars??

dreaming about honda ..is it possible to get a city or ek3 which doing 12-13 in city..

if what are the models i should go for??

pls help

we had a honda city 2001 manual transmission that returned 11-12 kmpl on the route that i used to take daily during rush hour traffic. same car with automatic transmission returned 9-10kmpl along the same route.

now our corolla axio with automatic transmission (CVT gearbox like newer honda city) along the same route does 9-10 kmpl albeit with a lil bit harsher traffic than what it used to be.

IMHO...expecting 12-13 in city driving, with ac in a sedan is asking a bit too much...

10 and slightly more is a bit more realistic

This topic is getting sooo boring now.

If you are in the heart of the city may be you can't get that much. But if you just passing only one or 2 traffic lights EK3-Vi should be able to do 12Kmpl easyly.

My one doing about 13Kmpl - 14Kmpl regularly with A/C. My last Kaluthara trip long trip with 4 passengers did 17.5 Kmpl (maintained 40kmph - 60Kmph and average RPM around 1600 - 1800. Couldn't do any stunts because of the dad on board)

17.5 kmpl? we can all dream I guess......

Machan I knew this might come up. Well this is tested with Full tank to full tank with exact distance travelled. Date is 26th December and travelled from Kandy - Kaluthara and returned same day, total distance around to 340Km and refuled 20L same day in Kandy.

But my route was early morning through Avissawella - Padukka and returned from Galle road Dehiwala - Balummahara junc. If you maintain ECONO mode (12 valve) and consistant RPM around 1600-1800 in long trips this is not a magical numbers for EK3-Vi

Sorry for sounding ignorant but all this time I thought that econ button was only for the Aircon compressor... hmmmm

I am truly surprised because you are a long standing member with over 3000 posts. Hard to believe you still not heard of the 12V mode of it.

Guys, a bit confused, MkX, you're referring to the Econo light in the cluster and Watchman, you're referring to the Econ button on the A/C right? That's what I got from your posts blink.gif Do they have any connection EK3 owners? Like the Econo mode will not turn on if you keep the A/C running on a high setting?

Yes its two different things. Econo mode on D15B engine and A/C.

There is no econo setting on A/C. It got the climate control A/C where you have to select only the temperature setting, so A/C maintain it or fully automatic setting where it matches the best setting temperature and humidity according to the outside temperature (not sure about technical stuff on climate control).

However even with A/C on, still ECONO mode on engine (12 valve economy range of 3 stage vtec) is functional. If you press accelerator pedal very gently it will easy to maintain. But if you always put the car in to 5th gear around 60Kmph and try to maitain the rpm and speed its not gonna work. Because slight drop in power will switch the engine to normal mode and you will burn fuel just like regular engine. Best in our country is to maintain 4th gear around 50kmph with 1600 - 1800 rpm, and if road is clear change to 5th gear at over 2200 -2300RPM. by this way you can maintain econo mode even between gear shifting. And if you travel 100km without stop in this mode, you can get surprised with the numbers.

our 2001 honda city with somewhat similar engine to the d15b once did 16.5kmpl down the route from mahiyangana to ampara. an economical speed of about 70kmph was maintained right throughout the journey and it is needless to mention that there were no traffic jams. the same car during the return journey with spirited driving and speeds consistently above 110-120kmph returned only 10.5kmpl. very big fluctuations in fuel consumption depending on driving stly and level of congestion is very much believable according to my first hand personal experience on a car somewhat similar to this ek3 in question.

LOL, I never claimed that I knew everything about Hondas or any other manufacturer. In fact my honda-specific knowledge is nil. And I see nor feel no shame in clarifying any miss-information I have. And yep, Blue3Haze is right, I was thinking of the Aircon Econ button.

And Contrary to your belief, the post count doesnt exactly portray a person's knowledge but merely how much he posts :P

PS: You shouldn't let yourself be surprised by people around you not knowing the A-Z in Hondas. To me and many others its just another car brand. a fan-boy-hyped-up one at that. :)

PS: what an irony, that was my post No.3400.

Ok.. accept my apologies. Me not expert either :). I've taken your reply in wrong angle. Hope I cleared the econo mode, its just cam profile that most variable valve timing engines has not only for Honda but lot of other new cars has them.

Haven't heard of any new cars with the 3 stage variable cam timing system, do any exist? Even the new Honda Civic with the R engine has normal VTEC inverted, afaik, leading to higher petrol consumption in SL.

So conclusion is - the OP should find a JDM EK3 Vi with the 3 Stage D15B engine if he wants a Civic with good F/C, right?

oops...my bad...when i said city....it was colombo....

lot more that 2 traffic lights to cross... and also folks will be driving in rush hour traffic to work....

Also it must suck to be in 1000~2000 rpm range in a petrol car... :P

No, no, please don't encourage that... driving at 50 kmph is Maruti territory. Most of the road hogs drive at that speed and it's a headache trying to overtake them everyday... :P Want to save fuel? Get to where you're going quickly. :)

Well as I explained driving style had to change when situation demands I don't think you keep it over 2000 when junior onboard, do you?

And for records, Yesterday night, left Colombo around 11.00pm after a wedding and arrived at Kandy just after 1.5hrs. RPM was well over 3000 hit the red line couple of times, and didn't bothered about how much fuel left. I doubt if it did even 8/9 Kmpl :P
