  1. i actually like the park and ride method. it works quite well over here. not sure how well it gets established in sl. but i hope it works anyways the interesting bit here is parak seems to have had a sudden urge to prove how sri lankan he is. sorry mate! you blew right from the minute you went "Why Srilankan Paying So Much Money On Cars?". cos a real sri lankan would know the reason for this and just remain quiet cos there's nothing one man could do to change it. what you did was no worse than asking a native sri lankan "why do u go to the loo with a bucket?"
  2. haven't seen that in ages
  3. alright guys! post your perfect 10 cars that you'll have in your dream garage the rules are simple. you got space for only 10 cars. money's no object. availability of your cars is not a problem. they should be the all the cars you'll ever need (from what we are familiar with right now). and explain why you picked each car. anyone who picks a sunny is a berk (unless its a gti-r) smart brabus roadster coupe- the closest one can get to being in a go kart on public roads. other than that i can't really explain why i like it but i just do. original mkI mini cooper- a real slice automotive history. rare and original. the one to teach you how cars work ferrari f40- born on the same year my favourite supercar ever land rover 110 td5 200bhp- probably the best colombo runabout. pretty awesome offroad as well Range rover supercharged- probably all the car i'll ever need. its all things to all men. no dream garage would be complete without one nissan r34 stock- something to flatter my ego toyota vitz rs turbo- for a zippy trip down the memory lane. mercedes 600- best car in the world to be chauffered around in. one of the best engineered as well. nothing commands respect better (ok maybe not in sl) bmw z8- for me the coolest open sports car ever. bentley brooklands- something to soothe my brow as i drive along briskly yet gingerly aston db4- my favourite aston. a real bitch to run i.e. very human like
  4. good question... just for fun i'm going to make my mom drive it when i get one imagine devinda's face if she pulls up alongside him
  5. i'm glad us sri lankans hardly ever suffer from such absurd levels of "vulgaritis" cos this could make those bright green lancers on our streets look like old money.
  6. does it have sticker on the back saying "my other car is a tuk tuk"
  7. i'd go with a defender... i think devinda will agree with me. so crude it gives you chest hair
  8. this was in india wasn't it?
  9. take a look at the that guy on the 1st pic. that says it all
  10. i havent built go kart myself but i can give you a few pointers on this. first of all i suggest u stick to paved surfaces cos to take it off road u'll need suspension and that'll just horribly complicate things for a first timer. i'll get to that in a bit. welding is pretty simple and you can probably master it over just one afternoon. but always listen to the health and safety people n get urself the right goggles/mask and please be careful when setting up the wiring. my theory is dont start welding bits together straight away. do a few practice runs on scrap metal cos u cant see a bloody thing when u got that mask on. building the framework would be a breeze. you could copy it from an existing go kart from the internet cos they would have tried and tested designs. wheels. steering, brakes and axles. this is where you'll need some help. turning out these bits yourself would be quite a task if you haven't done this sort of thing before. so i suggest buying them off the shelf like from say, ebay. this is where adding suspension would get you in trouble. cos you'll have to find the right sort of half axles, steering, tie rods etc etc. and you'll probably lose some of the go karts character in the process. anyways if you don't start on the framework till summer i can help you with the welding.
  11. wait till i bring down that mandrel machine
  12. call me mad! but there's something about those two that turns me on
  13. it sure does. wasnt it on autocar that these sketches first appeared? they come up with awful sketches sometimes. either way the next defender wont look anything like these 2
  14. ...followed by a series of crashes
  15. i can still remember the days when the 156 range started at 2.3 mil sigh!
  16. thats not a defender concept. thats a ford bronco with range rover nose digitally grafted to it. those drawings came out like a decade ago or something. i'm just worried they'll do something hideous to it
  17. im only interested in what the 2013 defender will look like
  18. i refuse to agree with you on that accusation. not when it comes from a man who lives among the decendants of british convicts and exciles anyways would you care to explain why you left sri lanka in the first place?
  19. maybe they'll charge us for wreckless driving or something but not speeding. so slow down when u see some cops
  20. i'm not sure if you've discussed this matter already. but i found out that the chief magistrate or someone rather has ordered the police not to use speed guns anymore. well it seems this has happened quite a while back and reason for this has been when some driver who was to be charged with speeding was presented at the court the police have failed to provide the time and date when the offence took place. so until such facilities can be implemented i.e. the police obtains speed guns with such options we can drive around peacefully without worrying we'll get caught doing 75 in a 70 soon (notice the sarcasm)
  21. lmao! thats better than the time i made that traffic cop jump. good stuff mate
  22. another incident i remember is this power war i had with a friend at school. we were always trying to outdo each other with speed and my friend is most famous for stalling his car outside the school gates trying to spin the wheels in front of the girls one fateful sunday we were racing down the marine drive. it was the race to end all races as we were running them one on one with no conditions and it was case of winner takes it all. sadly it was unusually busy for a sunday and we couldnt really put the hammer down till we got to last wide stretch before bamba station even though we started the race at the other end. by this time he had overtaken me and rest of the traffic ahead of us by driving off road. so i had a lot of work to do to preserve my reputation and that of my car so the road cleared up completely as i was going past the hfc. he was way ahead of me but i managed to overtake him doing around 170-180. just as i got the lead i saw him hitting the breaks really hard. so i turned back and wondering why he did that. but as i looked back down the road i realised it was going nowhere. and that we've almost reached the bamba station (where the marine drive ended then). so i hit the breaks the hardest n there i was going from 180-0 at full force. i swerved the car all over the road to lengthen the distance. but it wasnt good enough and i went over this ditch at the end of the tarmac doing about 50 catching some air and landing hard on the this empty lot next to the station where some kids were playing. the kids had already run to shelter when they started hearing the skid noise. and i managed to turn around just before this wall. anyways i quickly drove out before the people there made a scene. Disclaimer: this was like one of the highlights of my schoolboy antics. and i'll probably never see the likes of it again. and if i ever decide to race someone again i'd do it in the most controlled environment. and those who drive down marine drive at full throttle, please be carful.

and i noticed something else. although the car has a late registration its one of the chrome bumpered pre face lift models. i'm not the sort of person who encourages buying facelifted models. but in this case there was very little cosmetic changes done to the car and it transformed its looks from an early 80s cars to that of a 90s. plus considering the age of these models you are better off going for a facelifted model cos most of the niggles of the original would have been sorted out. and parts would probably be a lot easier to find as well
  25. Parak you just sound like one of those plucky foreigners/expats we meet everyday. they want villagers to do paddy cultivation the coastal population to fish and kandians to rule the country. the kind of people who expect parents to drop their sarong clad children off to school in a buggy cart. i'm sorry but we are fed up. we dont want anymore people like you to tell how the country should be changed. its not like we are a frogs in a well who are only aware of whats going on in there. we know what our identity is and we are aware of certain habits that we have which could be alien to you guys. but its not something one man started. and its not like your initiative will make us change our ways. you may have some serious points. but i've just come across way to many expats like you. all who left the country for different reasons trying to give advice to people in a country they havent lived in for decades cos they think they know something better than the people who actually lived there. if you come to power or somethng then we might listen to you. but i can guaruntee you'll lose all your thoughts and ideas on the way up. cos thats just how it is up here.
