Beijing aims for 100,000 electric vehicles on its streets by 2015 to curb air pollution

beijing.jpg

China's government has signed off on its 12th Five-Year plan and, among a series of other economic development initiatives, it stipulates that the city of Beijing is expected to have at least 100,000 electric vehicles on its roads by the end of 2015. Most of those cars with cords will be passenger cars and the vast majority will be of the electric-only variety, but other advanced technology vehicles (i.e. plug-in and conventional hybrids) will factor into the mix too.

The plan points out that, in addition to enjoying substantial subsidies, consumers who purchase battery-powered vehicles will enjoy the special privilege of registering their ride without having to enter Beijing's license-plate lottery. Furthermore, electric vehicles will not be subjected to Beijing's strict traffic restrictions. By eliminating the license-plate lottery rule and dropping traffic constraints, some experts believe that many of Beijing's residents will flock to electric vehicles.

Hybrid car tax rate revision April 2011

Hybrid car below 2000cc: from 38% to 50%

Hybrid car 2000- 3000cc: from 38% to 75%

Hybrid car above 3000cc: from 38% to 100%

Petrol car below 1000cc: from 95% to 120%

Petrol car 1000-1600cc: from 119% to 128%

I don't think this will affect Prius, and Honda Insight, Civic Hybrid, and Fit Hybrid sales much since it's a relatively small 12% increase for them.

I think it will have a greater increase compared to conventional cars.

the CIF of hybrids are far greater than conventionals.

so the landing price will be effected a lot

Feb 2011: In a measure to promote the conservation of the environment of Sri Lanka the government said it has reduced the import tax on hybrid vehicles effective immediately from 30% to 15% for hybrid models less than three and a half years old. President Mahinda Rajapaksa said in the budget speech last November that the government will completely remove excise duties and value added tax on electric and hybrid vehicles which are cleaner with fewer emissions to the environment in order to reduce environmental pollution in Sri Lanka. :http://www.colombopage.com/archive_11/Feb10_1297348337CH.php

Yeah.... then waited until there was a considerable backlog of vehicles to be cleared after New Year holidays, and increased the Taxes effective on a prior date.

Net result : a lot of folks are scratching their heads to figure out how to raise the additional 2.5 - 3 lakhs to clear their "Environmentally friendly cars which the Govt. encouraged them to buy"....
