Guys i need a big help...

My dad has saved some money enough to buy a petrol german car. We are thinking of a MB C180 or a 3 series.

We have inquried from the dealers and pricewise the Benz is a bit expensive than the bimmer and both provide good warranty period. My dad has test driven both cars and he says the benz was a bit comfortable than the bimmer.

I need to get an idea about which of these makes is better in the following departments, since we have only had japanese cars before, and since there seems to be a lot of people in this forum who use cars produced by these 2 car makers.

1) Relaibility

2) Maintanece costs

3) Resale value

I heard that BMWs give electrical problems very often. is this true? Also why is the numbr of new BMs very less than new Mercs on our roads today???

Since there seems to be a lot of people who own Benz or BMWs in this forum, i would really appreciate ur feedbak.

1.Reliability doesn't seem to be an issue although several years back MB had a rough time but guess both are back to normal (seems others should be able to shed some light on this)

2.Maintenance costs would be thumping amounts now won't it, 5 figure sums

3.Resale value the higher the value the harder they fall but guess these will hold on a bit better.

i guess the comfort n prestige is better in MB than a BMW :D

Hey man is this for the permit that you are trying to bring down these vehicles. Well both vehicles are good. The problem with the BMW is they offer e90(the 4 door sedan), which is expected to be replaced by the F30 i think. If that happens anytime soon; well If I were you wouldn be that happy. Any how check out both vehicles and see what trim options they offer. Are you sure the Merc is offered brand new for the permit, bcos last time I checked they only offered the A class. Depending on the options they offer choose the vehicle you want. In my opinion since both are entry level go for the Merc bcos it will be more noticed than the BM. Well thats what I think, hopefully you'll get the better vehicle. Good luck mate

Thnx for the feedback

Doesnt german cars have longer service intrvals than japs?

No mchn not for the permit. I heard about the F series but we cant say anythng about how much and when it will be here.

if it comes to looks and handling and the thrills the BMW is way ahead than the merc. But older people prefer benz, i think mainly bcos its more comfortable.

If its for a permit well then i guess BMW is offering the 320D drove it myself,

Personally good ride, but the trim option offered felt too i dont know plain/cheap and uninspiring, C180 on the other hand very much nicer trim, nice to drive and also good on juice, atleast Not bad.

anyway whatever you do buy enjoy it they both are nice cars in their own right, maintenance will set you back the same on both, maintenance intervals are longer since fully synthetic lubes are used.

given the choice id go for the C180, all the best to you and your dad on the new purchase

First of all this question has been posted many many times, so please do a forum search

1) contrary to popular belief German cars are reliable if properly maintained and the service intervals are much higher than jap cars.

2) yes maintainance cost will be a little high so you better understand what you are getting into before buying a Euro, When most people cut corners when it comes to maintainance and this is why Euro's have created a bad reputation in SL as unreliable

3)Please dont buy a Euro if you are one of those people who want to sell their car for more than the amount they bought it(Likely scenario with most jap cars)

Most Euros have more electrical parts than other cars to enhance the whole experience, the downside of this is that the more complicated parts are the higher the chance of failure.( :sigh: must be the 100th time im explaining this on the forum)

On question of Merc vs Bimmers- Go for the Merc if you want comfort, Prestige and resale value. go for the Bimmer if you want performance, and an unbeatable driving feel.

Again be very clear if you can handle the maintenance, fuel consumption and resale value cause once you buy it there will be no turning back.
