Normally if you put the "parking gear" there is a resistance that car won't move here and there like in the "Neutral" position..most probably the sound might be that resistance..since you have changed immediately to "Drive" position I don't think there will be a big issue..I used to do the same thing every now and then, when i was using axio..cause i used to ride my bro, BMW and it's a manual transmission..so automatically without thinking i did the same thing several times..don't worry there won't be much of a problem..

How do you accidentally go from D to P? I mean, there's N and R in between right (and a safety feature on the N to R shift; button or bent path) , or is this some different layout?

btw the "resistance" is a pin, called a parking pawl.

He probably put the gear into P while reversing.

There is a small notch that engage with a cog wheel in the gear box that lock the drive shaft When you put the gear lever in to "p". If you can move the vehicle when the gear in "P" and parking brakes are released, yes, the notch or the cog wheel has damaged. Otherwise, OK. But it is better if you can change the gear oil. This accident could have left broken metal particles in the gear box, that can be harmful to the CVT belt.

maybe that tiny gear lever on the prius... if i recall right it is possible

???

I haven't tried this, but in Honda CVT's, even if you change the gear lever in to "R" (actually accidentally) while driving forward the control unit does not allow the gear box to engage the reverse gear.

Dear Friends,

thank you for your comments so far.Actually this was occur when i try to bring Lever from " L" position to "D" position(After finishing steep journey). But in that case i push lever bit hardly. So it accidentially move to "P".Do i really need to change gear box oil?or just ignore.......

No Sifaan. If we press the button on the gear lever(not the OD) while the engine is running, we can move the lever into any position. No matter if it is from N to R or even R to P, and also the vehicle moves or not.

Dear Siffan,

Actually there is no bend path.just direct path.

Dear Friend. Thanks for your replies. But ,Then what is the "taka taka sound"?

ok,, i experienced it before...

while i was driving, my engine stopped for some reason.. and the breaks wernt helping much at that time..

i was going down hill,

i quickly changed it to parking, and the noise came..

its natural mate..

its just like you shift gears in a manual without pressing the clutch

and yea, it is not good for the gearbox, but since this happend once, it aint a big deal i guess

that is the safety feature, cos you can move from D to N without it, but to continue from N to R it has to be pressed - so then you can't accidentally push too hard and move into R.

Of course if you are pressing the button all the time then it doesn't help as a safety feature.

No, don't ignore it. Get your car checked by a mechanic or take it to the agents.

That tiny gear lever on prius cannot be shifted unless you pressing on the break paddle..so, in prius it's not a problem..and the unusual gear position (in second generation prius) also make it impossible to do those kind of accidentally shifting..

There's no 'P' position on the Prius gear knob. Only a separate 'P' button above it. And I think there's a safety interlock if you accidently press it nothing will happen, cos my 3 year old kid pressed it while at 40km/h but nothing happened!

Of course, and even into L position from 2 also it doesn't allow without pressing the button. Usually we used to move the lever while pressing this button. So presume this person also have done the same which will allow him to do so...
