I'm planing to setup Sala ProSat (Satellite based GPS Navigation System) in my car FB15. Anyone ever use it before or any advantage, disadvantage or any fault..?

I don't have one. But I use google maps with my Nokia GPS phone. It works very well. Almost everywhere is covered. But you need mobile network coverage along the road to use it

Check to see if the map shown for the area you may use it has enough detail as "you" require.

(of course one does not know all the places that one will go in the future :) )

Sometime back I checked it, but gave up the idea as the coverage of some out of colombo city areas I wanted was not enough for my requirement. (for others it may have been enough). Sala said they will periodically update the maps. So the maps may have more details now.

Also see if you will be comfortable with the screen size you are planning to get, while driving, specially in traffic. (here voice navigation that is available in Sala prosat is useful). Yes the mount supplied (or some other mount) will allow you to fix the device at a convenient position, but there are practical limits. So good to consider the distance from your eyes (and how good your sight is :) ) to the unit, screen size and zoom levels that you may generally use.

If you already have a phone with GPS and google maps for example, that can be an alternative. There are smart phone apps that can do some caching and even claim support voice navigation. Some apps allow off line maps - for e.g opens treet maps. (But open street map is not as detailed as google maps in some areas) At present am using google maps when needed. But I have not tried any voice navigation apps and yet to try some apps with off line maps.

Forgot to mention the following things:

- I wanted to transfer data between the GPS and a PC. They said in their system, it is not possible even for my own way points, tracks etc. Another reason why I gave up the idea. If you want such a facility, check if the system allows it now or a work around is available.

- If public points of interest are very important for you, at the time I looked at it, it was offering more than other GPS systems I looked or Google maps. You will have to review how it is now.

Sala Prosat is not bad

I use one

the only problem i it takes time to load, and works poorly in cloudy days

It is definetely better than those coming in the DVD setups,

i've tryed to use my nokia (X6) to navigate but it shows that I'm in kalutara when I'm in Malabe

I have been using the Sala Prosat for over a year now it has its good and bad points

the positives are is that it is certainly better than a phone based GPS and much safer also with the voice navigation feature

it covers all major locations and landmarks or points of interests throughout SL

you can map your route and I have used that feature quite often

the negatives are is that in it not that intuitive as you would want it be, its takes a while sometimes for the gps to give you the location you want it to route to

and on more than one occasion to my knowledge it made us go in the longer route when a shorter route is available

it always seems to select the route that is closest from your point and that necessarily is not the shortest route you can take

who needs a navigation device in this small country. specially if one is driving mostly around colombo. it's hard to get lost in here. for those rare emegencies, google maps on phone is enough!

shortest route or not, can it show the traffic conditions? :D

Yeah machan, but it'll be useful for me.. just because i'm not sucked into Colombo and also not ordinary office traveler. I'm using my vehicle rather good manner. So im really need it, just wanted to know? what's the best GPS system around which suit to our maps. Anyway, thanks lot for the info. I'm going get one, any objection guy... Again one thing. What's the best size for screen..? Any one who are using..?

If you really want to buy why do you ask for objections? It's your money after-all.

I'm not saying navigation has no use specially if you are a traveler.

Anyway, somehow its better than get lost huh? i just needed some information from the people who are using any GPS devise. just pros and cons with them? thanks for the info guys.

There is a buddy of mine using a Garmin. Its actually pretty good. It even finds the shortcut road we use to avoid traffic on the main road that goes thru a paddy-field. Malabe, in case you're wondering :)
