1- Pull

2- Problems / Parts Availability

3- Comfort / Driving pleasure

4- Fuel

both are excellent cars, and offer excellent value for money if you get a well maintained one.

1. standard TP12 comes with CVT gearbox and 2 litre which puts out around 140bhp. ample power for a car of that size. if you are not used to CVT box its a bit disconcerting hearing the engine boom at the same revs whilst the car gets faster! not sure about power of mark II but having driven one, it felt sluggish compared to the primera. If your after power though, opt for a primera HP12 which comes with a 6 speed manual, SR20ve engine and puts out over 200 horses whilst sounding lovely at the same time.

2. most parts for both cars are freely available at the agents and the usual joints at Panchi, though there may be some rarer parts that you may have to order through the agents. no real issues with either car. watch for high mileage primeras where CVT fluid has not been changed. other than that suspension wear and tear for both cars. both cars are very spacious and comfy, though mark II has a large transmission tunnel which restricts rear space a bit.

3. mark II being Rear wheel drive is pretty fun to drive compared to the tp12, though it too is more a comfy cruiser. tp12 has very soft suspension set up that does not encourage hard cornering and steering feel is also dull. HP12 feels more exciting to drive.

4. tp12 would do about 6-7 in colombo. mark II around the same.

if i were you, i'd look for a well maintained hp12. a bit rare, but if you find a good one, you won't regret.

If you can afford the Mark- then I'd say there are more options in the same price bracket to compare it with based on the factors you mentioned- since there is around a million rupee price difference between the Primera and Mark.

I'd think around the Verossa, Altezza, Accord, A4, Mazda 6, Skyline G35 etc

Dear RWD,

Machan great comments!! Thanks for this details, How much would be the Present market price for HP12? and also what is the different between HP12 and TP12?

The TP12 is the common sedan the HP12 is the sports version of it- which comes with a higher power engine with VVL, manual 6fwd gear box, different dash, higher grand of interior trim with leather linings, 17inch factory alloys, smoked front lights & sports grill. Also the HP12 is a lot easier to maintain that the TP12 and gives better fuel economy.

Search the forum for HP12 and you find more info as this has been discussed before.

good article on the HP12. Difference in HP12 and TP12 are the engines, 2.0 litre SR20VE neo VVL and QR 20DE. 6 speed manual vs CVT. Other than that, you can spot HP12 because it comes with 17 inch multi spoke alloys, whereas TP12's come with 15 or 16 inch wheels. HP 12 has a sportier grille, darker headlamps and sports pedals, bigger exhaust and bigger brakes and RPM all the way to 10,000! Guessing market price of an HP 12 would be in the 2.3 mil range, whereas I've seen TP12's go for as low as 1.9 if they are hacked.
