maheshw
Hi, i just got this via an email from a friend of mine.so thought to share it with our A\L friends. Sri Lankan Cops - Useful Tips 1. A single Cop, CANNOT stop you on the road ! (it's prohibited and you are not suppose to Stop either !) 2. A single cop CANNOT seize your driving license ! 3. Only a 'traffic control' cop has the authority to request anything MORE than your NIC when you are behind wheels. 4. A single traffic cop NEVER can press charges against you. HE MUST HAVE A WITNESS IF DOES SO. 5.. That's why you always find 'two' cops together 6. Police is a peace controlling force. NOT AN ARMED FORCE !!! They are prohibited by LAW to carry anything more than a BATON ! (but due to the prevailing WAR, they are issued Guns by a supreme court ruling, till the war ENDS) 7. So, if a Cop pulls a gun on you, YOU CAN sue him !!! 8. If a COP claims that you are drunk, you have the FULL right to ask for a 'balloon test', if they DO NOT HAVE it in their possession on the time of your request, you can GO. 9. Only Traffic Cops have the RIGHT to stop any moving vehicle. (that's why you find at least 1 normal cop in every checkpoint even though they are manned by Army) 10. COPS, CANNOT ENTER YOUR HOME OR WORK PREMISES without a court Order. You have the FULLEST right ASK for it, if they try to enter and also DENY their entrance if you 'feel' like it. 11. A traffic cop CANNOT seize your driving license UNTIL he fully states the crime you have committed and the relating penal code violation. If he is unsuccessful in stating them, you can go free 12. If a traffic cop seizes your license by force and ask you to come to the police station to collect it. DO NOT GO ! Lodge a complain directly to Police commission or the 'Provincial IGP', YOU can get the cop SACKED for his misconduct and unruly behaviour. 13. (for girls), If a COP asks for your Identifications and (if you think he's doing it on purpose to harass you) you CAN deny his request. He cannot arrest you ! you have the RIGHT to request for a Female Police officer. 14. (for Girls) If you are asked to be Body checked, it's your right to get it done by a female cop. If they don't have one in present, DENY their action.
Sylvi
maheshw, You have written a excellent post but how many police men do their duty's according to the law. I have been arrested number of times by police men on Road blocks to frightened me once I was taken to the Wellawathe police station when I refused to obey their orders as that was the height of Insurgency then the OIC warned the police men at that check point not to address the general public in unwanted language. I have more than 10 complains still on my computer written to DIG Colombo and Dig Traffic about the unwanted behavior of Police men in our country. almost all of them had Telephoned me written back and apologized on behalf of the police department. Only one Dig Colombo who did not reply me nor took any notice of my complain he has to leave this paradise island on a tragic ending. One police officer low ranker told me they can do wanders once they are in uniform. Most POLICE officers do not know how the word police was formed. Because every letter has a meaning on the word POLICE. This is our country we have to live here and die do a service to our country. That is my thinking. The purpose of the cop working at army check point's is another legal situation. Army cannot check civilians or something, where I can't exactly remember. Remember even school traffic controlling units (wearing yellow jackets in front of schools) can stop a moving vehicle and order to remove a parked vehicle, and that's permitted by the law. If u mess with them, possibly u can be fined in court. And for all above rules "This is Sri Lanka" a place where u can't play bull sh*t like in England, and also there are separate ways to deal with SL cops rather than requesting for a balloon
miniace
As mentioned this was talked about here comprehensively. Most of the info points are wrong and misleading. I can remember Police Dept held a press briefing and explained all when this email started circulating some time back. MINIACE

Sylvi
Members, According to news the Police commission is established have to be patient for some time to get details. Most Police men violate human rights. That is one reason people hate them. Most Police men do any thing for rupees and cents. If not any other way to accept bribes or other corrupt practices. maheshw
Just FYI !!!! Police dept is going to introduce a new system to pay fines. we can pay fines by sending a sms from the mobile & fine amount will get debit to police deptmnt account. so the policemen will get a notification & same time he will give the licene to us. no need to search for a post office or visit police station to collect the licenes.
