Hey guys,

as always, i need your opinion and advice on multimatic oil change.

people says you need to chnage it every 15,000k.m some says its 20,000km (I'm talking about on a EK3 Mi)

what do you think, i did try to find a service/user manual for a 99 Mi but no luck.

Two popular mechanics advised me to change it every 15,000km. Anyway me too think better to stick in to with that since CVT boxes should maintain well.

stafford recommended 17,000km, my mech in attidiya recommends 15,000. i stuck with the latter. i'd advise to use only honda CVT oil on this box. do NOT listen to any service center agents who try to sell you any other oil and say "aiyyo no, what difference men?"

and the Mi is not VTEC, sadly...

Hey,

I'm having a Civic EK3 MI. I can see the Vtec solenoid on my D15B engine. Same engine used on Vtec cars, right ? correct me if I'm wrong. But never felt the Vtec kick in on higher RPM's. I thought it was a mechanical failure. Is there any expert can explain this.

Many Thanks !

i could be wrong but i think the reason you don't feel the vtec kik in because ecu someone have changed your engine but not the ecu afaik ek3 mi ecu don't support vtec engine therefore you have a vtec engine but vtec don't kik in because ecu doesn't send signals to on the vtec.

btw someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

this bothered me a lot when i bought my honda. even i saw the solenoid you mentioned. after some intensive digging on the interwebs, this is what i discovered:

the Mi is a non vtec engine. the Vi, ViRS, Vti, Exi and Rti are all vtec. so basically this is the only EK trim that is non vtec. hurrah.

VTEC EK engines redline at 7200 rpm. Mi, 6800. VTEC's have an "econo" light that comes on when running on Econ mode. its to the bottom left of the speedo. the bottom right is the yellow ABS light. isnteaed of a light there's a plastic dummy oval. when the ECONO lght is on, the EK runs a super-lean mixture of fuel, helping to achieve very very good fuel efficiency. practically meant for highways where you cruise at a set speed and don't rev past 1500.

take a good look at the solenoids, and compare them with what you see online. there are many threads about this on many sites.

if anyone has any evidence to the contrary, let me know. although i'm about to part with my EK for a DOHC VTEC integra, i'd be the happiest man to be proven wrong here!

i was very stubborn about my Mi and its VTEC-ness, and was booed off autolanka for being so. wore a dunce hat and sat in a corner also. obviously i'm not going to give you links to threads detailing my abject humiliation, but some digging in the honda archives and you'll find me. being stoned to death... ;)

machan you forgot to mention about 1.3 EL it don't have vtec afaik ML trim don't have vtec too and si trim have vtec. :)

Hey guys, thank you so much for your input.

yeah sadly the EK3 Mi is not a VTEC, its just a D15B DOHC :) simple way to see if its a VTEC is to see the location of the air cleaner, if its on top of the throtalbody its a NON-VTEC :) true for EK3's but not sure about others.

ok, yet another myth among people on how to check the CVT oil levels.

some says (not quoting top gear :P) the oil level should be checked while the engine is running. some says, run the engine to running tempreture and stop the engine and after 60sec check the level.

whats the correct way to check cvt oil levels on a EK3 or rather fereo muitimatics ?

Im answering the original question here.. 18K-20K change is recommended. But make sure you never exceed the 30K mark.

Hondat CVT is called multimatic and a bit diiffrent from conventional CVTs it is designed to run in higher torque action and parts and mainly diffrent. Overall lubricants are less 'stressed' inside. So the figure 18K-20K change is healthy for the box and the wallet too.

The correct method of checking is that you have to run the car until it reaches the good working temperature.

Look for the yellow colour dip stick on the tanny area.Take it out clean, insert again and check. Make sure the level is between top and bottom and not above or below the limits.

Caution when you inserting the dip stick ,make sure the dipstick wont touch the dirt on tranny housing.Dirt inside will slowly damage the tranny.

Let me clear the point a bit, yes you need to run the car to bring the engine to working temp. But you need to kill the engine before checking the oil level.

Mine is 260 Allion and got an appointment from agents located in Maharagama (old Kl*en P**k joint). I'm now counting 40,000KM in ODO and the technical guy advices me to do the following;

1) CVT Fluid change

2) Break Fluid Change

3) Check the Plugs and do a tune up if required.

since my regular service interval is reached;

4) Change Engine Old

5) Change Oil Filter

6) Adjust Breaks

+ other regular washing.

Actually I came across with some of these facts on the internet. But i didn't want to believe that my car doesn't have VTEC. Anyway thank you very much for the info.

Toyota CVT and Honda CVT's are not the same in technology in used, but what your agent says is right for your car.
