guys need some quick info on carina GTs. A friend is hoping to buy one that seems to be in good nick, but the problem is the car aleady has done about 125,000kms. Read through some old threads and saw some guys mentioning about the engine needing a 'rebuild' close to 150k. Is there any truth to this? And what are the things involving this 'rebuild' and any idea of the costs involved? Is the engine in this car unreliable? Are there any special issues to look for in this car and engine? Cheers!

A engine does not decide to suddenly stop working at 150k. It all depends on how it has been used and maintained previously. Whilst these cars are equipped with a relatively powerful plant compared to its 1.5cc or 1.8cc siblings, many drivers who own such cars think they own a 6.0 liter pocket rocket. This is probably a reason why the engine suffers premature failure. the only major technical difference was that the GT engine came with 5 valves per cylinder and later in its life cycle was mated with a 6 speed manual gearbox

Best is to buy a car that has a reasonable level of maintenance records. An engine rebuild at 150k for a Toyota engine is a bit extreme, but not unheard of. After all, it takes some major talent to bust a Toyota engine.

I had a friend who owned one.. 301- model, 5 speed manual. 1996 I beiieve.. It had 186,000 km on the clock when he got it.. He was the 3rd owner.. He used it everyday from Malabe to Colombo.. Sold it at 220,000 km & all he did was routine tune ups, service, changed timing belt, brake pads.. Nothing major... It's a good car if it has been looked after.. As range rover said, for a car of this nature, maintenance records will help.. Not to mention you can tell a lot by speaking to the owner...

Whats the year of manufacture? I drive a 2001 Carina GT. If it's been maintained properly it wont give you any trouble and the engine is pretty reliable. Mine had a clogged VVT Pully when I bought it so your might wanna check for that + any signs of sludge deposits. Engine/6FWD gear box parts/suspension arms etc are relatively hard to come by and a bit more expensive when compared to the other 2 models. But the car never fails to put a smile on your face when you wanna go all out

Machang would you rather the guy have turned it back to 80,000 and sell it to you?

If the seller is selling the car showing such a high mileage the chances are that he's a genuine seller who has taken care of his car and not abused it and now trying to just peddle it off. As for if/when a rebuild is required the others just told you what you need to do...

don't worry. 150,000 is small. if you change engine oil and filters on time you can run at least 250,000./- minimum 5AFE is very good engine.. don't worry

Had a 5AFE that clocked 240,000 ++. No issues at all. Last time I heard, it was still going strong

All GT's have a 4A-GE Engine with 20V as Rangerover said. And not a 5AFE.

Carina GT Has 4AGE 20valve blacktop 1600cc engine and GT version not come with 5AFE engine which comes with standerd Carina Ti version.

YOM 2000 i guess, and that car had an autobox so guess the spares for that wont be a problem?
