We all know that the fog is small water droplets, when there is light coming to water it could lead to the total internal reflection.

In practical when you use lamps which illuminate more or less strait beam (Head beam) in foggy condition the light will directly reflect to your eyes due to the total internal reflection and that is why you can not use the head beam in foggy condition.

When the light is scattered or not in a strait beam the light will still do total internal reflection but the amount coming to your eye is less (light will turn 180 degrees in the direction in which they enter).

That is why you can use your low beam effectively in foggy conditions.

So due to this the fog lamps are fixed in lower position (as you see in OEM) than your head light are fixed and the internal projector are designed in a way it creates scattered beam NOT strait beam.

The colour will not affect this process so you might use white/amber colour.

So if you wanna fix a real fog lamp to be use in foggy/rainy conditions it should be mounted lower position not in the hood or higher up in the bumpers!

I've got blinded by some fog lights during night. Only option for me to is stand on the break. May be those idiots fixed them with more powerful lights to drive in the nights. If they had high beam on, i could've warn them with flashing the high beam. But with this fog lights it doesn't work.

how would you get blinded by a fog light? unless you were climbing a hill while the other vehicle was going down or the lights were pointed up, I have no idea how that would happen. Were the lights mounted on the roof?

Couple of years back here in Aus we were going by my friends Rav 4 and, being the weekend we were stopped by the cops for an alco test. My friend had his fogs on. After the checks the cops asked why did he have his fogs on when there was no fogs and my friend replied that it gave him better visibility. The cop said having the fogs on when there is no fog was illegal and he can give a ticket for it, but since we didn't know about it he would let us go. The reason he gave was, it will affect the on comming drivers visibility. We thought that was a load of crap but didn't want to argue with the cop.

i think people mistake "fog lights" with driving lights that are more long range and narrow beamed.

quite possible people hook up those low kelvin "fog" bulbs to their regular driving beams!

well in SL once a cop stopped my uncle as well for having the fogs on i think we were in a W124 if i remember it right. anyway it was raining which is the reason why he had the fogs on and the cop stopped us after the rain stopped :P

If the road is smooth and wet, the fog light will reflect off the road surface. If you have HID fog lights it's even more dazzling for the oncoming driver. This has happened to me many times.

You are right, i was talking about high kelvin Hids, sorry for not being precise. and i haven't seen anyone who has installed low kelvin HIDs in SL. most of the vehicles which had a HID instead of the stock fogs had 10000K HID, which is useless in a foggy situation

What vehicle model are you talking about? If I am not mistaken any HIDs above 6500K is illegal to use on the road. So it must be reconditioned cars you are talking about.

i'm not talking about a specific vehicle model but im talking about those cheap Chinese 10000K HIDs people have installed instead of fogs. Yeah not the company fitted HID
