Hi, guys I’m new to this forum I own a Nissan presia R10(GA15DS) last Friday when I’m driving (@night) lights went dim and suddenly car was stop @ the middle of the road then I recharged the battery and start the car I looked charging indictor but it went off and battery drained soon. I checked blown fuse/ fusible link but nothing and checked alternator B+ but it wasn’t give any voltage so finally I decided to put a new alternator checked in Galle it would cost me 5000LKR is it a reasonable price? Experts need your help :sport-smiley-027:

I think 5000 bucks is ok, but you should check your alternator with an auto electrician to make sure the alternator cannot be taken back to life :)

DPK,

First of all dismantle the alenator and check up what is wrong on same. Some times may be a small repair like brushes. How many killometers your car has done.

Rs. 5000.00 is the range of used Alternators.

5k is a good price IMHO. I once refurbed a busted alternator at Pala and it was north of 6k if my memory serves me right.

Thanks a lot for your comments you all. mmmm I checked stator coil + rotor coil and brush set all are ok but something wrong with diode plate or voltage regulator i sow something melted out (like tar)from the voltage regulator. if so my question is why that charging indicator goes off even battery is not charging at all

Thanx!

Had a similar issue sometime back. when rev beyond 2k indicator light dissapeared in my case, but no charging at all. found out to be busted voltage regulator!.

'dpk',

Charging light will go off if 1 volt above 12volts are produced from the alternator but that is not enough to charge your battery.

It is better you change Alternator to a another used good serviceable one because Diodes & regulator will cost you more than the used alternator.

Alternator regulators act in different ways. How long ago you had on high RPM warning light go off.

You said this happened suddenly. If it was me, I would've first checked the engine wiring loom for any possible short circuits, especially the feed wire to the alternator and all grounding points, again within the engine wiring loom. Diode plate can be busted like this all of a sudden for two reasons, one is poor connectivity/current flow to battery and the other is short circuit. Make sure you have sorted out grounding, connectivity and short circuit issues (if any) before installing the new altnernator. As Ripper said, 5000 is a good price for a used (non repaired locally) alternator.

'harshansenadhir',

Normally the earth of the diode plane earthed to the Alternator housing. There should be a heavy wire to the Alternator output wire, It carries power from the alternator to power the accessories and to maintain the battery. The smaller wires usually in a plug are either the alternator's voltage sense, Stator, regulator/indicator light. Very rarely good Alternator will earth., on their + wires.

Short circuiting can happen if the feed (+ out) wire touches ground due to some reason. Not always within the alternator.
