I am planning to buy my first SUV. After looking around a bit I have pinned down the following to select from.,

1. Suzuki Grand Vitara (5 seater, 2003, V6, Petrol)

2. Nissan X Trail (2001-2002, 2L, Petrol)

Seeking for some assistance to understand aspects on reliability, driving experience, fuel and maintenance costs, off-roading (soft) capabilities etc.

Are these the only options or can you stretch to a Rav 4?

I would say the X-Trail as its the more capable 4x4

I am using a Grand Vitara XL-7, I would say if you are looking for performance, Grand Vitara would be the most appropriate choice. But if you are looking for less fuel consumption and average performance, X-Trail would fit.

Vitara has some issues, since it is not comparatively common, parts are expensive and maintenance is expensive too, therefore think about your needs and decide on this.

You can go for a petrol tucson or sportage which is about 4 years newer than these.

Or if you streach you'r budget you may be able to reach a diesel one as the doctors are selling them for low prices due to the permit

Xtrail is a crossover SUV and So is the grand VItara. The latter is not a crossover.
