Engine Oil Level Drop

Recommended Posts

I have a Toyota Passo year 2007 bought unregistered and now it's mileage is 62,000. From a recent time I'm observing a small drop in oil level when runs for about nearly 1,000 KM, It drops by about 3 or 4 mm. So I fill the amount again. I use Toyota 30 as the engine oil which says can be run for 5,000 KM.

I've been told several ideas like oil should be changed to Toyota 40 since it's not the actual mileage that shows and might be much more, some said to check the engine head oil caps/ seals or something. However there is no abnormal smoke from the silencer. When recently checked for Green test it was perfect. Can I have some thoughts/ ideas or suggestions pls since I'm a bit puzzeled now. Is it really because 30 is thinner and gets vaporated and needs to change to 40 or something wrong some where. I dont think it's a oil burn thing since there is no smoke like that and no oil deposits even at the silencer tube.

Thankx.

Jayantha

For small engines, some oil loss may happen due to some oil being burnt from being constantly operated in high revs. Can you check for blue/whitish smoke when you rev the car to about 5000 rpm? Thinner oil can exaggerate this a little.

The other explanation is a small oil leak somewhere.

If you don't see a leak anywhere under or around the engine, then the only way the car can loose oil is through burning. You cant be sure of a car's mileage just with the numbers on the dash.. it's not that hard to change it and so many cars imported to SL has this issues, their mileages has been changed even before they were sent to SL. Try using 15W-40 next oil change and see whether there is any improvement. I personally do not go for 10W-30 in any of my cars i bought used. I used 15W-40 in a quality brand and never had any oil burning issues...Any user manual will tell you that it's ok to use 15W-40 in a country with a temperature range like SL.

Thankx for your advice.. I will see after racing the engine for such a smoke. As many have advised also will try by changing the oil to 40..

Yes .. there's no leak at all from anywhere and I checked by getting it to Arabian motors also. What they also advised was to check and see by changing to oil grade 40. Agree with your coment on changing the odometer mileage. For higher mileage grade 40 is recommended. isn't it. I'm using Toyota Oil. Thanks a lot for your advice.

Well..for higher mileage cars you can go even thicker as in 20W50.. but then i don't think you'll need that thicker in yours. 15W40 will do. Sometimes it's not just mileage but how your car has been maintained before and what's the oil which has been used before also matters. As far as i know Toyota genuine engine oil I'd the same as Castrol so you can use that too if it is saving you some money..I personally use Castrol or Mobil.. but it's upto you..go with the brand you trust..

Hi,

I'm having the same problem with my pajero IO.

Mileage is roughly 125,000. There is no oil spill but the oil level reduces drastically.

Only once or twice I have noticed some smoke comming out, that also at the start up.

The oil I use is valvoline 20W50

When I consulted my mechanic, from uni mo, he said that inorder to fix this I need to replace gaskit, orings n bearings!

Can this be the problem?

Do you guys have any suggestions for me to try out?

I have no idea on a place for buying these if that is the case and if purchased through uni mo, the prices are absurd :(

Appreciate any advice you guys can provide!

Thanks.

Get done a compression test on your engine. Base on the results you can accurately say what repairs are required to be done. I don't no whether Uni*Mo is doing it. Me think that reputed places like edir*sinha Br0*s are doing it.

If I were you I'd run the car with a even thicker oil for as long as i can if i don't have any start-up issues or overheating problems until it comes to a stage where i do have to rebuild it, and then do a proper overhauling replacing all major parts. I personally think that replacing oil rings is just a temporary fix.. might as well run it while i can and do a full rebuild later on rather than spending twice.

Thicker oil? The thickes in valvoline site is 20W - 50. Is there a thicker oil than that?

Valvoline do Have a special range of products as high mileage oils. You can try that or use a monograde oil with grade 40 or 50. 20W50 is a multigrade which means it will have a 20 grade at cold and 50 while it's hot. Monograde will have the same thickness when cold and hot..try a different brand if you can't find it in valvoline.

There are Pro's and Cons

Running with current condition will save your money in the short run. But it is some thing like you are walking in darkness. you don't know what is prepared for you in ahead.

In the long run; Getting done a compression test and a proper analysis will say exactly where are you and you can schedule your expenses and be prepared for it.

Hi All,

Just an update to provide an insight/view to anybody else whose having the same problem as I did.

The culprit in my case was worn out Valve Oil Seals.

Once they were replaced, the oil issue disappeared like a charm.

Thanks,
