Hello guys.. i‘m getting an ignition noise from the engine after head gasket replacement. tried adjusting the distributor and the noise seemed to have reduced a bit and seems to go away when distributor is on full retard. Mechanic suggested that i should check the crank angle sensor. could this be the culprit? and any ideas on running the distributor on full retard? Bad for engine? badly in need of some info on this matter. cheers!

Are referring the pinging sound you get with over-advanced engine? If so are you sure that the timing was set right when the head was re-assembled?

Yeap, rechecked timing as well, all good

It is somewhat unlikely that this happens due to a faulty cam position sensor because it is a GO or No-GO type of a sensor. When you say you checked the timing, was it with a timing torch? If you get pinging sound you engine must be advanced. SOMETHING DOESN'T SOUND RIGHT HERE?
