Atf Brand

Question

Hi Experts,

I have got a Toyota Vios and I am about to change the ATF.

Once a guy at a service station adviced me to put ATF in BG brand saying it is long lasting and ideal for Toyota. But one baas said me to use Toyota ATF.

Please help me to figureout who is correct. How much is each brand cost?

Thanks in advance.

sampathpj,

More than the "brand" what is important is the type/standard (Dexron II, Dexron III, Mercon, SP II, SP III etc etc). If you get a good "brand" but the wrong type/standard your auto tranny would be talking to you sooner than later!!! Check what type/standard your car takes, it's usually given on the auto-oil dipstick. When that is sorted check if the "brand" that you select confirms to the type/standard which your car takes.

PS

I am of course not an "expert".

I agree with CJ5. You need to figure out what the grade of ATF you need rather than buy on a brand basis. This is usually written on your gearbox or gearbox oil dipstick or in your owner handbook.

Having said that I have found that Toyota branded ATF oil is very reasonably priced so it might be worthwhile sticking to Toyota. Some people also say that Toyota ATF oil is actually Mobil ATF re branded Clearly Toyota does not manufacture lubricants or hydraulic fluid.
