Engine Oil Denoted Letters (Sl, Sn/cf)

dtd

Question

I have a 2010 swift vxi; used with 95 octane petrol

noted it has better fuel economy with Toyota engine oil(SL 10w-30) than the castrol.

this time usual oil was not available and Toyota SN/CF 10w-30 was there.

can someone advice me is there a difference.

What was the grade/viscosity of oil you used earlier ?

I personally don't think you will get noticeably better fuel economy from one brand of oil over another when they are the same viscosity (10W30). It is rumored that Toyota branded oil is made by Mobil anyway.

Simply use the manufacturer recommended grade of oil from a good brand (plenty to chose from Castrol, Mobil, Caltex, BP and car manufacturer branded oils from Toyota, Suzuki etc)

Agreed Don...

the Vehicle manufacturers recommendation is to use SG 10W30

earlier i could not find any oil witn SG specification, so i used SL 10W30

But now it is not available, now it is SN/CF 10W30

cuz i know 10W30 stands for 0'c viscosity of 10, and running temperature viscosity of 30 (Correct me if i am wrong)

but i do not know what they meant by the letters,

so i wanted to know is what does the manufacturer meant by SG,SL or SN/CF. is there a real difference in that.

Not an expert but from what i know

When the letter in the end goes more towards Z it is better

that means SL is better than SG and SN is even better

But as the oils get advanced their ability to cope with the high contaminants in sri lankan fuel is diminished.

But slight performance and economy advantages will be there. But the oil will deteriorate more with the millage and frequent oil changes will be needed

So it's adequate to stay at or above the recommended.

Thanks Clark's son,

i cannot understand how the contaminants in fuel can mix with engine oil.

but what i can understand is that as the letter goes towards Z, its more advanced type; is that what you mean?

that means those oils will have more fuel economy at the expence of high deteriotation?

(pls correct my undestaning to what you said; if i am wrong)

following helped understading;

API is the body who do this standardization, following is the link to engine oil related guide

http://www.api.org/oil-and-natural-gas-overview/fuels-and-refining/engine-oil/~/media/Files/Oil-and-Natural-Gas/Engine%20Oil/MOTOR_OIL_GUIDE_2010_120210.ashx

That is a good article and answers your question about the SG SL etc standards. Basically it denotes the generation of engine the oil is meant to support. The latest generation of oils would most probably be backwards compatible with older engines.
