if you want to check before you buy you can take it to car checks in Col 5 and they inspect and give a report (i used their services twice last year)

1. The car is fairly reliable, but had a few problems with the front suspension, and door locks. I'm not sure how freely available parts are, but because the bora was based on the Golf I'm sure you get engine and suspension parts in SL

2. I have no idea about the value

3. You need to make sure the car has a traceable service history, maintained by a VW specialist, and there are no abnormal noises when you go on a bumpy road and all the door locks work properly

4. The above are the known faults. If you search in European forums, you'll get more information. Also the automatic transmissions in SL were problamatic in a lot of VWs though I'm not sure if it applies to this car

thanks for the replies....well the purpose is to buy a car around 1.5M or maybe around 2M but the car should be somewhat respected level in the society....but considering these parts and cost etc it is bit hard also i think to go to VW,Ford,BMW,AUDI,PEUGEUOT etc....but when comes to the street there are many people using them too....i feel these cars are not that bad to use without spending big money on them daily? still somewhat reliable but other hand it gives some level of experience + comfortablilty

I think the 406 is the cheapest to maintain and has the best parts availability. The Audi A4 1.9TDI is bit of a dark horse, an old school diesel, seems to be able to tolerate our crap diesel with German build quality and comfort.

But I'll consider the C class as well

Also I'll consider Volvo over Ford. A few more cars around, shares a lot of the components and the interior is nicer than Ford.

Mondeo is the only Ford u can get for that price range (Lasers are Mazdas after all). Most of the Mondeos on the road are molested by second and subsequent owners due to them changing hands at low prices. Finding a one in very good mechanical and physical condition may be just a dream. Also u will need a friend in UK to get spares from. Engine is same as what u find in Mazda 626/Premacy/Tribute.

On a plus point, Mondeos are very comfortable cars. They are built on the same platform as Jaguar X-type.

This is where you've gone horribly off track. Machang what ever your buy make sure its something you can afford taking the total cost of ownership into account instead of just the purchase price. Unless you are one of those people who gain immense pleasure out of what other people think of you based on the car you drive. reminds me of the sinhala term 'gedarata maragathe loketa paragase'

That's an interesting way of putting it. Normally its used the other way around to make the Jag look inferior right

Dude, this is the wrong reason to buy a car! If you want people respect you for the car you drive, you're trying to get the respect of the wrong people.

If someone does respect you, it should be for your as a human being. Use the money to better your education, or treat your family better. Live by good morals and principles. You'll be respected.

As for the car, you dont seem to 'need' a euripean brand. Get a decent reliable Japanese car.. like a corolla :)

Same platform, yes xxx, at least when I rode the X Type and the Mondeo, the X Type is a lot more comfortable, while the Mondeo suspension was hard and seem to be geared towards better handling.
