We can see so many un-reg cars, suv's and vans for sale especially in the Kohuwela area any idea if these traders make a lot of prfit from each sale say above Rs 100k or is it just Rs10k's ?

I also see some people buying cars and selling with garage plates privately is that allowed to sell a car you imported without registering it first?

I guess there is a marginal advantage when you personally import a vehicle. You have a better chance of knowing the actual condition of the vehicle that you are buying, and you will be able to get it down for less. But there are risks involved too. Do a search, these have been discussed before.

anyone care to answer as Im exploring the option of a direct imports benifits in terms of cost vs buying from a dealer here in SL

I assume that you are contemplating used Japanese vehicles [ let me guess you want to buy an aqua right?] - in that context Car sales are known to bring down accident repaired cars and sell them off to unsuspecting buyers . Recently an importer whom i met during a function told me that majority of the cars they bring are accident repaired and these cars are given to car sales - having said that you can get the car inspected before buying - at the agents or at other places. Importing is risky but if you can contact a genuine importer whom you can trust then you can personally go through the auction sheets with them. There are so many individuals now who import vehicles on others behalf their profit margin is lesser than the car sales.

BTW re the profit i guess car sales make a profit larger than 100,000 rs easily for each unit.
