Chassis Number Engraving?

Hi

I purchased a Ford Escort Mark 1 1972, 8 Sri, I registered it under my name, and wanted to do a color change and weight certificate for it to be exported, the RMV notified me that the chassis number isn't visible? and requested to make an affidavit from a lawyer, which I made according to them, can I just engrave the chassis number at any workshop or garage? does anyone know the procedure? and does anyone know that should it be a government approved workshop? Please Advice.
