madmax
I've used brands like Laser and Cobra. Even though you get false alarms near GSM towers and Automatic doors it works well on the highway. But you have to be alert in order to slow down.

I searched in ebay and got confused.. there are tons of different models. thanks in advance Cobra ESD 7000 which was occasionally on sale for $30 in Circuit City chain in US worked perfectly in SL. Pretty high sensitivity. It was good with RADAR. No experience with laser in SL. But had some good response with laser here. Laser gun is hard to beat. Most of the time when you get alert you are already registered on cops gun. It sends out only a very narrow beam for a fraction of a second. So chances are low in getting that picked by detector when used on cars ahead of you. The known best in US is V-One (Valantine One). Expensive but capable. ### BTW I dont want to contribute this information to add to high number of speeding fatalities in SL guys. Please use responsibly. sharkster
i'd grab a laser/radar detector too if a good one came my way cos i've been getting one too many speeding fines for being marginally over the limit which is pretty crappy... however i've seen some pretty ridiculously priced... There are devices on eBay costing around $28 with $25 shipping. I recently bought one for $28 and now I'm worried about customs. Lasitha R
Hi Guys, Waking up this old thread to get some info on speed guns police are using on the southern expressway, I'm using an Escort Passport 8500x50 detector, which picks up X, K, Ka bands and lasers, I checked it few times on Southern EW, which did not alert at all. I was thinking whether cops have moved on to speed cameras. Anyone got more info on this?
Straga
I too would like to know what kinda detectors the cops use on the expressway. Went yesterday and there were two instances where i spotted cops holding something that looked like a speed gun, fortunately they were on the other side of the road Thinking about getting down a radar detector, anyone has suggestions? Went yesterday and there were two instances where i spotted cops holding something that looked like a speed gun, fortunately they were on the other side of the road Thinking about getting down a radar detector, anyone has suggestions? I've owned four radar detectors from the four major manufacturers: Cobra, Whistler, Escort, and Valentine Research. Beltronics is another major radar detector manufacturer. They are owned by Escort and under the skin their radar detectors and Escorts are almost the same. Prices range from $30 (Rs3000)to over $500 (Rs50,000) for a windshield mounted detector. Cobra and Whistler make low to mid range detectors. Escort and Beltronics make mid to high end detectors, and Valentine Research makes one high end radar detector (the Valentine One). With radar detectors you get what you pay for and there is a big difference in performance and features between a cheap model and a high end model. My personal opinion is that the cheap ones are just not worth it. Not only do they have a much shorter detection range than the top detectors, their filtering algorithms are much much less sophisticated so they false alarm all the time. Security systems, garage door openers, and other microwaves share the same frequencies as police radar and the detector must do a very sophisticated analysis of the signal being detected and determine if it is police radar or some other signal. The cheap ones don't do this very well and go off for all kinds of things. This can drive a person crazy and want to leave the detector off which defeats the purpose of having a detector. My advice is to choose an Escort or Beltronics or Valentine One detector. They have been at the top of the radar detector tests and ratings for literally 20+ years. Forget about buying a cheap one in SL. Have someone who is abroad buy one and bring it over when they come to SL. You could order one online and have it shipped, but then you have to deal with high shipping costs and the hassle of customs. And again, you generally get what you pay for. Depending on the cost of speeding tickets, a good radar detector can pay for itself. I got a Whistler SRT 30 model from USA, for 30 dollars (three thousand rupees at that time.) It works fine in Sri Lanka incidently I used it there last July and August it detects the frequency SL cops are on and works quite well around corners as well (they were checkin speeders on the new road to Embilipitiya). you can google it but I doubt they ship to Sri Lanka. Anyway don't expect to spend more than 3 or 4k on one that'll work in Lanka. Dude, Beltronic & Escort are much much better brands compared to Whistler, infact Whistler will hardly servce the purpose ;-)
milindu
The Cobra ESD 7100 (9 band) and the XRS 9445 (14 band) both with Laster detection used to work perfect till the new speed guns were re-introduced. I suggest you find out the bands used by the speed guns these days before getting a detector down.

I was not trying to establish it as a superior brand, rather as something cost effective that worked well in Sri Lanka at that time. This is long before SL cops got laser detectors, became embroiled in "speed guns shouldn't be legal" scandals, and before our streets were heavily proliferated with garage door openers, security cameras, microwave ovens and whatever else Californikan claims are regularly lined up alongside our A grade roads and confusing the hell out of our detectors (Californikan, this ain't california, think a minute about what you're saying man). As far as the Whistler goes, it served its purpose against the cops speed guns half a decade ago. Whether it would work against whatever they use today I have no idea, nor do I care (I sold it along with the car that used it long time ago) - I have no problem if someone wants to spend 50k on a speed detector to avoid the hassle of a 1k fine (if you're capable of getting copped for speeding 50 times over then the cost of a speed gun detector should be the least of your problems). Whatever works for you.
