Coimbatore, Feb 19:

Sri Lankan drivers held sway in the Meco Motorsports - Kari Motor Speedway Race Meet 2007 held at Chettipalayam near here yesterday.

Rohan De Silva and his son-in-law Dinesh Jayawardene clinched the two sprint races to begin the new motor racing season on a bright note.

The Lankans stole the show as some of the promising Indian drivers had no answer to the speed and skills of the visitors. In the first sprint, it was a close tussle before the father nosed ahead in the 10th lap and coasted to victory.

Problems with the brake put paid to the aspirations of pole-sitter Gaurav Dalal of India, and he had to be content with a fifth-place finish.

The only bright spot for the Indians was Akkineni Anand Prasad, who placed third in the first sprint.

Dinesh Jayawardena, who timed 12: 42: 497 in the first race and had to satisfy with second place, had a change of fortunes in the next race and led from start to finish to romp home in a time of 12: 49: 978.

All in all the second race too saw the domination of the Sri Lankans as they captured the top three spots.

Later speaking to reporters about motorsport back home, Rohan De Silva, leader of the Sri Lankan, said the sport was gaining in popularity and over 25 events were being organised every year by various club.

Giving details about the major events conducted in Lanka, De Silva said other than races conducted by several clubs, national events and Formula Ford were major events.

Talking about the tracks, he said there were two tarmac tracks, which were not recognised by the FIA. However, he said things were moving in the right direction with regard to setting up of new tracks. 'Until then we are looking forward to India for more races, as the quality of racing has improved tremendously,' he said.

Further, he said that they purchased 10 new LGB cars from India and would be importing more soon in a bid to popularise motorsport.

its great to see Lankan motor racers keeping é Lion flag flying overseas!

but i gotta be a wet blanket n ask é question as to how someone who is not old enough to have a normal drivers license is racing? - isnt it a pre requisite ti have a basic street licence to get a race one?

its great to see more n more ppl entering é motoring scene - dont take it é wrong way , jus wondering how a 17yr old can compete.....

but all in all excellent run n warmest congratulations to them all :)
