Peugeot 407

Hey Guys,

Going through the papers last Sunday, was very surprised to see the number of Brand New imported, registered Peugeot 407 s (including diesels) put up for sale by their owners. A number of them were even advertised by the agents. Is there something wrong with these cars, that their owners seem to be dumping them so hastily ? Or is it simply that they are pre-price hike imports which the owners are trying to make a fast buck on ?

Anyone know anything about this ?

Most of those are pre price hike ones as u noted -

but the Diesels were mostly bought on permits issued for under 2000cc so i'm guessing they must be 1.6L Hdi's...

as nice as the 407 is in terms of ride etc. , it remains a Peugeot & as such is bound to be temperamental

These are cars imported through Government Secrataries permits. The limit was 1.8ltr petrol and 2.2ltr diesels and also transferable. All these cars are brought down by dealers and not individual owner of the permits. And to be sold not for personal use.

Not only 407s but a large number of diesel SantaFes and Tucsons can be found advertised.

The permit had a CIF limit of USD17000, so 407/Santa Fe/Tucson qualifies readily...

BTW these permits were sold in the 2-3Mil range. However the CC limit has now been changed to 3000CC diesel, even the new 2.8ltr Prado diesel can be accomodated within this and the permit value has gone to 5mil!

what exactly do you mean by "not for personal use"??

if they were to be maintained as govt. vehicles/official vehicles of the secretaries , then No sale would be possible né?

although the capcity allowed has been increased, the stated value which the permit allows still remains at $17,000 is it? -shame if so,otherwise the Discovery 3 would have been eligible as well....

if these permits were being sold, the same ole "non transferable upto 5 years" rules applies is it?

so who does the book show as the owner - the name of the Ministry or govt dept? or the Secretaries name?

What I meant by "not for personal use" is that the almost all permit holders have sold the permits to car dealers and made a quick buck and it's the car dealers who have imported the cars...

These permits are transferrable, meaning the car can be sold and transferred once imported. Permit is in the name of the holder... so you will have his name in the registration first....

Just dropped in at the Hyundai showroom and according to them both the Tucson and SantaFe diesels have cost only 3.5 Mil landed. Considering the first lot of permits were sold even below 2 Mil, the total cost is about 5.5 Mil.

And how much are the dealers quoting now? 7 Mil! a total rip-off!

Actually the new Santa Fe looks pretty good and judging by the reviews it's got in Europe and Aussie seems to be a decent drive as well. Has anyone tried out the diesel ?

Getting back to the topic of the 407s, I've been examining a number of them closely on the road, and from what is visible from the rear the undercarriage looks pretty untidy with all sorts of bits and pieces protruding out below the rear crossmember. - a recipe for disaster on our roads.
