randiljosh
considering toyota had to drop the name corolla from europe, dropping sunny and adopting Tiida (a possible global name) makes sense.
Pericles
peri the biggest concern with recon vehicles is genuine mileage... had this tiida in question been recon it could have easily had over 100,000kms but you'd never know... 50k, 100k, what ever, ur judging a car that has run a lot and basing ur conclusions on that. And I belive we were talking of a N16, not a Tiida. The point is, u can't condemn a car for being bad after it has done 50k in god only knows how much maintainance work needs to be done. considering toyota had to drop the name corolla from europe, dropping sunny and adopting Tiida (a possible global name) makes sense. Tiida is not a global name. Read that Wiki article I posted in the previous page.
Gummybr
This is turning out to be a very interesting discussion. First let me clarify this, NIssan Sunny ended with the FB15, The Sunny which was sold here recently was infact a Pulsar. Take the chassis codes the Sunny was always a B series, Pulsar / Almera were all N series, so the belowed N16 is actually a Pulsar. I don't know the code of the Tiida yet. I dont think the Sri Lankan agents liked the idea of dissing the Sunny name completely with the Tiida introduction as the name Sunny was what sold Nissan in the SL market. Another thing the UK people always liked the car named Sunny though it was bland to drive and look at as it was more of a practical and economical car. I think they still miss it. As for Toyota I don't know why they changed the name to some weird name (not yaris). Corolla was the best selling vehicle in the world and why should they change that?? I think its all to do with their future thinking of positioning the brand in a higher category. There is the Scion for the youth market, there is Daihatsu as small vehicles, there is Hino for heavy use, there is Lexus for prestige and luxury. News is that the Toyota Aygo (remember the small car jointly produced with PSA Peugeot Citroen) will become a new brand name and also looming in the horizon is a possible performance brand if Toyota fully takes over Subaru. The hatchback thing is some interesting thing. The Europeans love hatchbacks. Take the golf, Focus, Astra and all the cars they love, they are all hatchbacks. These are the vehicles they use daily. Sedan is something Americans and we Asians love. Americans love it as it makes them look so macho. We Asians love it as we think that anything other than a Sedan is like downgrading themselves. Beleieve me I know this. There are ppl who do not buy a hatchback even though it maybe ideal for him/her and fits the budget well, why?? reason is its like a ladies car for them. A company executive wont like to drive a or be seen in a girls car. Its all in the mentality. If you take automakers like Ford, Citroen, Peugeot you will notice that they produce more hatchbacks than Sedans. This is why the SRi Lankan market doesn't get these sort of vehicles. take the Focus for example is a superb car according to reviews. If we do get it here no one will buy one. Luckily for us the Japs and Koreans do build Sedans for their markets. So we do get good cars.

The Don
you mean like auris bdw i think they dropeed "corolla" only in europe coz it isn't quite a hit there although it rules in US and rest of the world... do you reckon toyota will drop the name "corolla" for rest of the world too ... i don't think so I wonder how people have made the assumption the brand Corolla has been dropped in Europe, its well and alive atleast in Britain The Corona seems to have been replaced by the Avensis (The Carina was never officially marketed here I think) The Sunny and the Corolla were never about enjoyable motoring or exciting sporty motoring or whatever, they were essentially for bread and butter type motoring, I think in the UK at least you have the Almera which replaced the Sunny though I must say I have seen very few Sunny's around Mind you if people say the Sunny was only a hit in Sri Lanka or something they are very wrong, people forget where more of the Sunnys on our road came from, Japan, so they did quite well in their home country too Edited April 20, 2007 by The Don
Gummybr
I wonder how people have made the assumption the brand Corolla has been dropped in Europe, its well and alive atleast in Britain That will be till the Auris as Isuru meant goes on sale in UK. isurujosh
may be Auris has not yet fully been rolled out but all reports/reviews that i read indicate that corolla is to be axed in europe and replaced with Auris... perhaps corolla is to be sold parallel to Auris in europe ??? after all britain isn't quite european... lot of things about UK makes it unique from rest of europe ... but one thing's for sure, even the bread & butter models of europe/britain have to have a decent driver appeal like the ford focus otherwise they cannot really dominate in euro market (at least in the mkt segment where corolla competes in)
The Don
That will be till the Auris as Isuru meant goes on sale in UK. The auris is already here, maybe I am mistaken in my assumption for I haven't quite seen any 2007 Corolla's arround

GTAm
Another thing the UK people always liked the car named Sunny though it was bland to drive and look at as it was more of a practical and economical car. I think they still miss it. Can't agree with you here Gummy. The Sunny name was a joke. As was the Bluebird, Gloria, Cedric....do you want me to go on ? That is why they were changed to Almera, Maxima, Primera, and there was a Q something which was actually a Cefiro in drag. Maybe a small crowd liked the Sunny but not the market in general. Corolla was the best selling vehicle in the world and why should they change that?? You have to take this with a pinch of salt. The Corolla has been completely redesigned inside out from the initial model. So this claim of "best selling car in the world" is a little more than Toyota hype. As you know. The Ford Focus used to be the Ford Escort and before that the Anglia, Prefect etc. They are like the Corolla except they have different names. The proper holder of the "best selling car in the world" is the VW Beetle! Perhaps Euro auto and Supra Natural will enlighten us firther? If you take automakers like Ford, Citroen, Peugeot you will notice that they produce more hatchbacks than Sedans. This is why the SRi Lankan market doesn't get these sort of vehicles. take the Focus for example is a superb car according to reviews. If we do get it here no one will buy one. Luckily for us the Japs and Koreans do build Sedans for their markets. So we do get good cars. We don't get the Focus, etc because its so expensive and will not sell in volumes that are profitable. Also the agents who have these brands are fast asleep. Even though Peugoet sold quite a few 206s and 307s here. As for the Japs we only get the dynamically wanting Asian versions here. Not the same car that's sold in the US and Europe. This is how many Japanese companies make so much money. They give lesser cars to the Asian who are not that demanding anyway. These cars cost less. This is how it has been for years. But now I see things changing but very slowly. As for Korean cars I do not know much. I have only driven one or two and they are quite behind the Japs IMHO. Pericles
If we can just recenter this, it is running quite a bit OT.
