Gear Change Issue :(

Hi all

When I’m driving my car I feel that my car has control over the gear change (it’s a FORD Laser manual). When I’m driving mostly in traffic when the speed is almost zero and if I want to put to first gear from second it’s bit hard (like car prevents me from changing to first). When the car is not moving and to move I can change to first without any blocking). Even for second and third also the same situation. Wonder whether the vehicle speed controls my gear change?

IMO Maybe something wrong with the clutch paddle! you should get a mechanic and adjust the clutch paddle a little bit!

Did u change the gear oil recently?

I did change the gear oil and clutch plates as well because of this.

What is the gear oil have u used? GL4 or GL5 (80W or 90W) if u use GL5 (90W) this can be happened. GL5 not suitable for cars. Castrol GL4 and Mobil GL4 gear oil are very good. (bit expensive) also this can happen because of the "Brascon" problem.

I had a similar problem in one of my cars and found out it was the syncros. I am guessing a bent fork would cause trouble in all gear changes and not just 2nd and 3rd.

since when is GL5 not suitable for cars? GL5 is the minimum requirement on subarus...

Hi Nilantha,

I got a bit o an issue too with gears - MAzda 1.6 Manual . Issue is it gets stuck soem time in either 1 or 2nd gear and just cant moeve it even if I pushed down the clutch. Only wen I switch off the engin can I move it.

Wat;s this BRASCON thingy ? Sorry bit clueless on that

If the manufactures recommend GL5 you should use GL5. but usually manufactures recommend GL4 (Toyota, Nissan)

The act of the BRASCON is keep combination of the gear liver and the gear wheel (inside the dear box). When you push the gear lever, the gear lever contact with the appropriate BRASCON and pull the gear wheel to locate. Separate gears has separate BRASCON

In addition to gear oil brass corn clutches, it is difficult to change the gears when the speed is low because of mismatching speeds and ok when the speed ok. So you need additional force to do it (pull the brass cones). If the gear levers are bad especially the hinges and pivots, it tries to buckle than move.

The job description you gave for Brascon sounds pretty much like what's sometimes reffered to as "gear forks" is it.

These are the little things that moves the gear wheels to either engage or dis-engage...

When these things wear out it's tough to get the gears engaged and the box tends to get stuck in one gear...

In my little experience these things wear out if the wheel contact "dogs" (if that's the right word) wears out...

I've had a problem like this before and the mechanic only replaced the damaged gear fork.... Suprise suprise within a week the gear problem came again...

after getting into the gear box the second time...we found out even the "new" fork was completely damaged and the real culprit was the dogs in the gear wheel itself being worn out...

Please tell me where these "brass cones" located and place to get it fixed. agents also couldnt find the problem. its a big problem for me when driving.

Don’t try to replace BRASCONE. It is only money waist. Because your dear box other parts also now not good. (Bearings, gear wheels etc.) Try to find used gear box from Wijerama and fix it to your car. Whats is your car model?

Bro not really specific about the type of box you have

Guess you got linkaged box if its the earlier version problem could be a linkage pin worn or in case of cable ,it has the old type cable try adjust the nut -Go to a qualified technician or an engineer for this.

Please dont get carried away with the "ever complicated" comments.

My car modal is FORD Laser 2001. When I check with Agents today they asked me to replace the whole gearbox rather than replacing parts. Can anyone tell me a place to buy a used one. I need a manual gearbox.

Agents don’t have parts with them now.

First and foremost as Mini advices go to a qualified engineer for a diagnostic. The reason for this is the agents will always tell you to replace the whole box as they do not do rebuilds, and sometimes the problem can be resolved much more cheaply by a person who knows what he is doing.

For used gear boxes there are many sources,

The main places are Delkanda Wijerama area on high level road and the many body parts shops you find there

Second source is the place known as Engine Watte in Panchikawatte along the canal

Since its a Ford there is this place on Mount Lavinia Galle Road on the right hand side if traveling towards Galle after the templers road junction, and they always have loads of goodies for Mazda and Ford

the thing is machang I went to this papiliyana place where they say good for Mazda and ford and end up replacing Clutch plates and stuff because of this issue. still im having the problem. so i need a good person whom can tell exactly what the problem is. went to agents tooo but no luck.

Its very difficult to find gear box for this model. Not delkanda or wijerama. Only place to find the gear box is EURO NIPON Wadduwa or Dambulla. Unfortunately I don’t have the phone number.

why would this be the case ? the car in question is quite popular, but perhaps the problem is the fact it is a manual, while most cars on the roads are auto.

I still think you should rule out the easy options before you go prodding on all over.

And Thunderbolt, if its not too much of a detour, speak to Wasantha on base line road, he is on the left hand side if you are travelling away from Borella and is just after the railway crossing after the prison. Perhaps he would recommend a gear box swap as well cos its cheaper than the labour and part cost of a gear box rebuild if one is required, but the best thing about him is he has such good contacts with the bods in panchikawatte he will find a gear box for you if one exists in panchikawatte

Got a similar issue myself – I too would take the advice MINIACE gave- don’t be in a hurry to replace. I’m going to take mine tomorrow and see if it’s sorted out, as DON said there is a wheel/razor/ pin that has something to do as well… hay drop me a mail with your contact- would like to see if we both have the same issue chammu7@yahoo.com
