Speed Kills!

No matter how big ,how expensive your machine is.....no matter how powerful you are....speed kills.

Former Minister Sooriyarachchi's road accident is a good eye opener for all speed fanatics. The ill-fated Toyota-Landcruiser was reported 120km/h when overturned. We talked about speed contributed accidents but lets comprehend...!

Watch your speed..watch the limits especially when driving outstation!

I was also shocked to hear that this has happened at 120kmh... didn't seem like a lot cos i'm sure most of us are exceeding this on our outstation trips and even in and around Colombo in wee hours

I was so shocked the way a landcruiser has collapsed at this speed and you can only imagine on a bad day what it'll do to an average sedan

On conspiracy theories... i don't think it's impossible for this sorta incident to happen especially with the way these guys drive around. Not only they are speeding but also breaking all the road rules and even mere common sense... With the sensitivities that surrounds this incident i'm assuming that they will have some sorta higher level investigation into it...

MiniAce had hit the nail smack on the head... If you are speeding, no vehicle is strong enough or safe enough to protect you in an accident :(

We have seen what happens to the average sedan at those speeds. Didn't you see the pics of that Carina in Mirihana and the Civic in Seeduwa?

I guess the weight means it just crushed in with more force than a sedan anyway.

hmmm lost of conspircay theories about this incident, anyway did this model come with airbags?, coz i dont see any.

By the look of the pic, the driver must have taken a sharp bend at high speed and must have toppled and hit the tree in the background. The impact is straight on the roof and no damage on the front buffer. So don’t think the air bags got the sense to activate by the point of impact.

i read that it hit the tree above ground level (probably the tree was down an incline) so maybe the driver took the bend too fast or tried to swerve and oversteered (or is it understeered??) straight off into the tree and then dropped to the bottom of the incline.

Conspiracy or not, the fact remains that the vehicle was travelling at a speed which is way beyond the suitable speed for that particular road... At over 120k, is there any vehicle that would have saved those lives? another (probably wasted) reminder that it's the driver... not the car scenario...

(On the brighter side, for once, hats off to those bribe seeking cops who does keep us slowing down fron time to time on tempting stretches. :action-smiley-060:

yep...seen pics of the EG8 i think that was smashed up like stepped on cola can

missed the carina though...

btw... i was at the bamba cop shed recently after a fast-on-the-draw cop speed gunned me down at 71 in marine drive :action-smiley-060:

there was this blue lancer at the cop shed...K plates i think...front was all bashed up but the air bags haven't gone

do our fellas check their air bags as a part of routine...?

After a few visits at Form*laWorld...the tech buggers there were saying that if you weld things incorrectly and fix the buffer incorrectly etc etc the air bag sensors might not go off...

it's such a shame to have air bags and them not function when you need them the most <_<

Hi Guys,

I wonder why you guys are even talking about air bags after seing pictures of the wreck, because

A. Airbags or No airbags the passenger compartment is crushed and the poor souls in there never had a chance. Airbags expect the passenger compartment to hold its integrity and are used to dampen down the g forces caused by the rapid de acceleration in a crash on the human body. If the passenger compartment collapses they are of no use at all.

B. Airbags cannot complement passenger compartment integrity

C. As Pila very correctly points out the sensors which trigger airbags only go off on specific types of impact cos there is no point deploying side airbags on a full frontal collision and vice versa (might do more damage than good !)

Also Land Rovers Land Cruisers Monteros Pajeros etc as Pila points out have high ground clearance and are built for multi terrain use not for speed and I think its a well known fact Pajeros and Monteros have a habbit of toppling at high speeds and I personally know of a few occasions when this has happened but caused no harm to the ocupents as it happened on carpeted roads and the vehicles righted themselves. Family sedans can do higher speeds safely than these vehicles and whoever is driving them should be aware of their capabilities. The other vehicles are Vans and even buses which I have certain people trying to drive like formula 1 cars, but the fact is especially in vans, there is virtually no crumple zone on a head on impact, you have a high center of gravity and somethings gotta give at some point !.

Correct as usual Don.... I Just heard by the way, that this vehicle had apparently skidded, Tipped over on it's side, and hit it's roof on the tree.... unconfirmed info, but it would explain the damage to an extent...

keep an eye on that registration number it'll definitely pop up in the form of another SUV lol

do you reckon the land cruiser is salvegable? if the chassis is intact the rest won't be much of an issue right?

talking about insurance write offs any news on Jay's old M3? i remember someone saying its been rebuilt at Milroys joint

XXX I do not think the vehicle itself is salvageable cos I can see the chassies behind the drivers row of seats is bent quite badly, but like you say it will most probably used to import a new body and mated to a smuggled chassy or used to give legitimacy to a vehicle already mated in the country !! SUV registrations never die in SL :)

we Sri Lankan's love our SUV's lol

isn't there a way to reinforce a damaged chassis?

I guess Sri Lanka being Sri Lanka you could theoretically straighten the bent chassis but I think its difficult to get it back to what it was before and the strength would be compromised

You could theoretically rebuild or reinforce the chassis using tubular piping but with the option of cheaply sourcing a Land Cruiser chassis and body from Japan (relatively speaking) and with the number of SUV's running around with dodgy papers it makes more sense to re purpose the registration rather than trying to repair this vehicle, at least thats what I think

Last time I saw it, the body rebuild was complete, with the engine in, but had no windows, interior or paint. Also it was lying in a neglected corner of the garage. Maybe they put it on hold for the time being.
