Locally Assembled Vehicles

Hi guys.. need some advice.

What do you think of the locally assembled Japanese vehicles? What they do is, bring down the chassis, engine, and body separately of used vehicles in Japan and re-assemble them here. RMV registers them under a different name, and give a new number, legally I must add.

I'm eyeing a Toyota Surf which is very cheap compared to the original vehicle (about 1M less), and has done about 135K km in Japan. What do you guys think? Is it a good idea to go for one..

I dont think that you will be able to register the assembled vehicle from the RMV!

There might be a old tread discussing about this. try to search it!

Its a place in seeduwa, the cost for a 2.5L turbo auto is 2.7M and a 3L turbo auto is 3.1M. These are all 95' - 98' models. Have done about 130k Km in Japan. But are in pretty good condition. Same condition surf here is about 4.2M!!

That just it, they do register these now.. you'll be getting a brand new number also.. but the book will say "assembled in sri lanka using reconditioned parts" and the make is not Toyota but some other name..

but my worry is, are our brothers doing the assembling correctly? (I suppose that will have to be answered by them.. he he) I dont want to be in the middle of Yala and the 4x4 suddenly stop working or something..

These vehicles are so far so good. RMV will register this. Only thing is this will register as “ASSEMBLED IN SRI LANKA” Label. These vehicles come under “G7” number plate. May be you all have seen this vehicles on the road. (I have seen few vehicles in Nugegoda and Maharagama area)

I think the 'G7' plate you saw was probably a garage plate from last year...

there was a thread on this before maybe you can dig it up... i couldnt seem to find it

Problem is will the government like the idea

They want money and they will not like the revenue go down.

leave the revenue, will our brother (assemblers) fix the nuts properly , safety kalley....................

I have the feeling these vehicles will fail miserably in the safety aspect

I was speaking to a friend of mine, who deal in cars about this just a while ago, and he mentioned these vehicle comes with only the body and chassis separated (in the commonly know form of container-bud) even though the authorities are made to believe all parts come separate.

mmmm so this is hapening again..last time.. 8 mnths back i checked a 94 prelude done by them...looks good.. only thing its sohc 2l auto...wanted 1.2mn...they giv org reg plates..(like ka,kb)..only the book say made in sl or assmbld in sl smthn like that..

I too tried to find the previous thread, couldn't find it.

Gearhead- Can you pls post more details - contact no.s, address etc?

Obviously this is legal as the RMV is registering the vehicles. Only point I cant understand is [as someone has already pointed out] -how come the govt has approved of this project as there is loss of revenue? hope some one has an expanation.

now i heard govmnt charge a sum of 1k per vehicle.. or smthn similer..this proj was stoped due to 2 court cases..

the only logical explanation is that some minister probably got his cut from the people doing this and thus the permission :) thats the way the cookie crumbles in Sri Lanka...

As i heard (though unconfirmed) you pay a minuster 300k and you get a permit to get down a cut/bud car ...

RMV stopped registering these vehicles recently.The company is in a legal battle with BOI now.All vehicles are issued only with garage plates and no time frame offered on full registration.But not all garage plate cars are locally assembled C7,C8,G7,G8.... etc.Only few insurence companies providing insurence coverage to locally assembled garage plate vehicles.

That they keep as a company secret! I heard most assembled were non-cut type.

I do think Mini if the chassy is cut in any way it would seriously undermine its structural integrity and thus the safety of that vehicle !!. Personally I would not like to be in one in an accident !

No, the ones in question here are not cut/bud vehicles, i saw them myslef. they come in seperate chasis, body and engine. nothing is cut.. thats one thing i'm sure of..

but the latest what i heard is that the main "pull" this guy had in the goverment had been unfortunately "blown" off in the recent past :violent-smiley-099: (no need to mention names). and can see some stormy weather in the near future for this venture.. so, i'm holding on to my money for the time being.. :(
